About the Exhibition:

“Pressing Matters, 2018” Is Whiteaker Printmakers' second juried printmaking exhibition, and will be held at the Emerald Art Center in neighboring Springfield, Oregon. All traditional (hand-pulled) printmaking techniques are eligible for entry. No digital prints, please. Our juror is Margaret Prentice, Professor Emerita in the Art Department at the University of Oregon. Four entries will be selected for cash awards up to $500.00.

All print artists may submit up to 3 original prints in any traditional printmaking technique.  If you submit more than one print, please note that you must load all  images in one application and submit them together.  Information about each individual image will be provided with each upload.

Eligibility:

This is a juried exhibition and competition open to all print artists currently residing in the U.S., 18 or older.

Entries must be original prints, hand-pulled; no digital or photographic prints. Accepted media are all traditional printmaking techniques, such as etching, monotype, mezzotint, woodcut, linocut, screen print, lithography, etc.

Entries must be no larger than 24 x 24 inches (including frame), and suitably framed or mounted, ready to be hung in the exhibition gallery using wire hangers. Total depth of framed work should not exceed 2 inches.

Entries must include a title, or be noted as “Untitled”, must include a medium description.

Juror, Margaret Prentice:

Margaret Prentice is currently Professor Emerita in the Art Department at the University of Oregon where she taught for 26 years. Prentice taught drawing, intaglio and relief printmaking, papermaking and artists' books. She received her BFA from the Univ. of Arizona and her MFA from the Univ. of Colorado. Prentice received a Japan Foundation Artist Fellowship in 1994 visiting papermakers and printmakers in Japan for 4 months. She was an Artist-in-Residence at Kyoto Seika University and at the Univ. of Fine Arts in Tokyo in woodcut printmaking. Prentice visited famous hand papermakers in 6 prefectures, learning their sheet forming techniques. She received a UO Faculty Research Grant to document the primitive amate papermaking of the Otomi Indians in San Pablito, Mexico. In 2001, she was also an Artist-in-Residence at the Glasgow School of Art, making limited edition etchings. Her original prints are included in the book "Contemporary Printmaking in the Northwest" published by Craftsman House.

Prentice has exhibited her work in over 250 exhibitions nationally and internationally. Her work may be found in over 55 public collections including the Houghton Library and Harvard University, Dartmouth University, Northwestern University, the National Library of New Zealand and the Getty Museum Collection, among others.

Awards:

The Juror will select four accepted entries for cash awards: a $500 first place award, a $300 second place award, and two $100 third place awards. Only one cash award per artist. Awards will be announced on the day of the exhibition opening. Winning artists will be notified by e-mail, and award checks will be mailed by November 12, 2018.

Sales:

All accepted entries will be offered for sale; submitting artists must include a sale price for each entry at the time of submission.

Whiteaker Printmakers and Emerald Arts Center will retain a forty percent commission on all sales.

Unsold works will be returned to the artist after the close of the exhibition.
