About:

Small Matters is a national juried exhibition hosted by 437CO, Colorado Mesa University Art Gallery in Grand Junction, Colorado. The exhibition is open to all US-based artists 18 years of age and older working in 2D and 3D media. Works are limited to 18” x 18” x 18”. Entries must be original works created within the last five years, and not previously exhibited at the CMU Art Gallery. Artists may submit up to three works with a $35 entry fee. Accepted works will be exhibited at 437CO in downtown Grand Junction, Colorado, December 7, 2018 - January 25, 2019. 437CO is pleased to announce that the exhibition will be juried by Jared Steffensen, artist and Curator of Exhibitions at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. There will be $1000 in prize money awarded, including a first place award of $500 and a solo exhibition at the gallery.

437CO is CMU's art gallery in downtown Grand Junction. The gallery features national and international guest artist work and works by graduating seniors from the BFA Studio Art program.

 

Eligibility:

The exhibition is open to all artists 18 years of age and older, living in the United States. All forms of 2D and 3D art are accepted including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, graphic and digital art, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, and metal arts. Pieces should not exceed 18” in any direction. Entries must be original works created within the last five years, and not previously exhibited at the CMU Art Gallery. All accepted works must remain in the custody of 437CO for the duration of the exhibition.

 

Submission:

All submissions must be completed on CaFÉ. Please submit JPEG files. Prepare your files according to the CaFÉ guidelines.

You may submit up to 3 works for a $35 entry fee. For each work, you may also submit up to one detail image. If more than three works are submitted, only the first three will be considered.

 

Shipping and Delivery of Work:

Shipping and delivery instructions will be emailed following the jury process. Accepted work must arrive by November 30th for shipped works, and December 1st for works dropped off in person; works arriving after those dates may not be included in the exhibition. Works must arrive exhibition-ready, complete with hanging wire—no saw-tooth hangers or clip frames accepted. Works that differ significantly from the submitted images, are poorly framed, and/or are structurally unsound, may be disqualified. Shipped 2D works in frames must use plexi or acrylic, not glass. Three-dimensional works must be able to be comfortably carried by one person, and should not be submitted unassembled. Works must be shipped with a reuseable container and packing material, and must be accompanied by a prepaid return shipping label. Hand delivered works not picked up by January 31, 2019 will become the property of 437CO. All shipped or delivered works must have an identification label attached with the artist’s name, title of work, date, medium, and sale price. Artists will receive a loan agreement upon their acceptance, this loan agreement must be sent with the piece, or mailed or emailed directly to the gallery.

 

Sale of Artwork:

Sales are encouraged. 437CO will retain a 30% commission on all sales.

 

Publicity:

437CO may use images of art work accepted into the exhibition for publicity purposes. Artists agree to allow images of their art (either the artist’s digital files or photographs taken during the exhibition) for educational, publicity, and archival purposes.

 

Awards:

1st Place Award: $500 and a solo exhibition in the gallery in the fall of 2019 or 2020.

2nd Place Award: $300

3rd Place Award: $200

 

Insurance and Loan Agreement:

Artists must insure their work during transit to and from the gallery, and for the duration of the exhibition. 437CO is not liable for any damage caused during transit to and from the gallery.

All works must be accompanied by a signed loan agreement. The loan agreement must arrive by December 1, 2018. The loan agreement will be provided upon acceptance of work.

 

Juror: Jared Steffensen:

Jared Steffensen is an artist and curator currently based at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City, Utah. He earned his BFA at the University of Utah in 2002 and his MFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006. He was the recipient of the Joan Mitchell MFA grant in 2006, and he developed and implemented UMOCA's Artist-in-Residence program in 2013, which provides long-term support for Utah based artists.

His work has been exhibited in Mexico, Germany, the Netherlands, and across the US. His curatorial projects include Adjunct, Cities of Conviction: Contemporary Artists from Saudi Arabia, Desire Lines, and the upcoming Working Hard to be Useless.
