Overview:

Midtown Park, in the heart of Houston, is seeking skilled muralists interested in being considered for future projects in the park’s underground parking structure. A small group of artists will be selected as finalists.  As projects become available, over the course of the next few years, these finalists will be invited to submit proposals for specific murals.  Budgets will range from $10,000 to $25,000.  All artists interested in being considered must submit qualifications on-line by noon on September 10, 2019.

The Park:

Midtown Park offers three acres of new public urban park and open space with complementary pedestrian-oriented streetscapes. The park’s larger greenspace – located on the 2.5-acre site south of the multifamily development – includes a great lawn, a flexible pavilion, a wetland stream and trail, native landscaping, interactive water feature, playground, public art, game courts, market areas, and a dog park.  A wide array of festivals, performances, markets, and other events keep the park exciting throughout the year.  The park is home to major permanent commissions by Houston artists Sharon Engelstein and Dixie Friend Gay. And will soon feature work by Shahzia Sikander and Krista Birnbaum.

Additionally, the park features a half-acre retail plaza located adjacent to McGowen St., which will include a full-service restaurant, a food and beverage kiosk, and public plaza space next to the METRORail station.  This section of the park will feature a permanent piece by artist Shahzia Sikander.  The park’s underground parking garage provides 400 spaces for public use.  For more information on the park, as well as on Midtown, please see consult the Midtown Houston website.

 Eligibility:

This call is open to all artists or artist teams located in Harris County with some experience painting murals for public display.  We are only seeking muralists at this time.

 Selection Process:

The art consultant for the park will pre-qualify a small group of artists who will be invited to develop specific concept for mural projects as they are identified.  Any artist invited to submit a concept will receive an honorarium for concept development.

 Submittal Requirements:

Artists interested in responding to this RFQ need to complete the application on-line via CAFÉ, by the September 10, 2019 deadline.
