CALL TO VIRGINIA ARTISTS: You are invited to submit works for the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art’s (MOCA) annual juried exhibition, New Waves 2019

New Waves 2019 will be on view March 22, 2019 – August 18, 2019.

Juror:  This year’s juror is Carmen Hermo. Hermo is the Associate Curator for the Brooklyn Museum’s Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art. She has curated the exhibition Roots of “The Dinner Party”: History in the Making, and co-curated exhibitions Half the Picture: A Feminist Look at the Collection and Something to Say: Brooklyn Hi-Art! Machine, Deborah Kass, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, and Hank Willis Thomas. Additionally, she co-organized Marilyn Minter: Pretty/Dirty (2016–17) and Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960-1985 (2018).  Previously, she was Assistant Curator for Collections at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2010–16). She has worked with the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art. Carmen received her B.A. in Art History and English from the University of Richmond and is pursuing an M.A. in Art History at Hunter College.

Eligibility: All artists currently residing in Virginia. 

Eligible Artwork: Work in all artistic mediums and made between the years of 2015-2019 is accepted for review. Art exhibited in previous New Waves exhibitions is not eligible for review.

2-D work must be ready for installation and may not exceed 84 inches in any dimension, including frame. The piece cannot exceed 75 lbs. (Sawtooth hangers are unsafe for installation in our galleries and cannot be used.)

3-D work cannot be larger than 84 inches including a base and must not exceed 150 lbs.

Installations: MOCA will accept previously created installations. Images of installations should be submitted. Submissions should be flexible to fit any location within the gallery. (Installations intended to be placed outside the museum galleries cannot be accepted.)

 Video and Sound work are accepted.  Artists should list details of installation and presentation preferences in the comments section of the application

Fees: A non-refundable fee of $35 (credit card or Paypal) is required.

 Acceptance: MOCA will notify all accepted artists by February 15, 2019. Accepted artists will also be listed on www.VirginiaMOCA.org.

 Artists are responsible for delivery and/or shipment to and from MOCA. Accepted works may be hand-delivered or shipped by the artist. All works must be packed properly for return shipping. Pre-paid return and/or pick-up is the responsibility of the artist. Return prepaid shipping label from UPS or FedEx should be enclosed.

 Liability: MOCA will provide insurance for all work while it is on the premises. Artists must provide their own incoming and outgoing shipping insurance. MOCA is not responsible for damage due to improper packing or creation of work using non-archival or unsafe materials.

 Side Notes: MOCA reserves the right to photograph and reproduce any work in New Waves 2019 for publicity and educational purposes.
