PROJECT INTENT/THEME: The committee seeks medium and large scale works of art made by artists residing in the greater Albuquerque area which exhibit compelling craftsmanship and technique in a range of media including painting, printmaking, drawing, collage, photography (for all digital photography original works must be printed on archival paper using archival inks), weaving, mixed media and assemblage. The committee is especially interested in larger scale, original two-dimensional works of art. (Giclee reproductions of original works will not be accepted.) 

SITE: Sites for this collection of artworks will include, but not be limited to, Albuquerque City Hall, the east and/or west complexes of The Albuquerque Convention Center and other City-owned facilities that are deemed appropriate by the Albuquerque Arts Board.

MEDIA/STYLE/SIZE: Categories for Purchase will be: Traditional and/or Contemporary, recently completed (within the last 3 years) works of two-dimensional, original art. The size range for the works will be (at minimum) 24” to a side and a maximum of 72” to a side. Works that fall within this dimensional range will be considered.

Two-dimensional works must be appropriately framed. If there is a relief component to the work, it must not extend more than 3 inches from the surface of the work or wall. Frames must be in new condition and ready for immediate display. It is recommended that artists who are selected review framing and presentation intentions with Art Program staff. All framing materials must be museum quality.

For Photography, Drawing, Pastels, Assemblage, Mixed-Media and Print work
1.  Mat Type – 100% Cotton rag.

2.  Mat Size – not to be less than 2 inches all the way around

3.  Backing – Acid Free, museum quality.

4.  Mounting – Acid Free, museum quality.

5.  Frame material – simple profile, carved/sculpted molding stock not recommended, stained or professionally painted molding recommended. 1.5” or larger depth.

6.  Plexiglass or glass protective covering required on all 2-d pieces. Glass on pastels.

 Photographs:

7.  Spacer when necessary so Plexiglass/glass does not touch the artwork.

8.  Security hangers or D-rings must be used, no wires.

Painting on Canvas:

1.  All paintings must be glazed (glass or PlexiGlass), appropriate to the work.

2.  Security hangers preferred.

For Weaving  or fiber works:

1.  Work must be under Plexiglass/glass.

2.  Frame material – simple profile, maple or oak molding, 1.5” or larger on the face.

3.  Spacer when necessary so that Plexiglass does not touch the artwork.

4.  Security hangers preferred.

The artwork must be appropriate for public display at any City facility, following the Public Art Guidelines section VI.J.5. (See below)

  1. Works of Art that include subject matter such as the apparent representation of violence, inappropriate nudity, denigration of individuals or cultures, or desecration of significant cultural symbols, will be reviewed for their appropriateness for public display and/or;
       2. Works of Art that include religious
           subject matter or symbols may be placed in a public space as
           long as it is not in a location where it can be revered and is 
           solely for the purpose of exhibiting cultural or historical
           traditions.

PROJECT FUNDS: $100,000 is available to purchase artworks to be acquired for the City of Albuquerque Public Art Collection. The source of funds for this project is General Obligation Bonds - 1% for Art. The Arts Board hopes to purchase artworks priced within an average range of $500 to $5,000.

APPLICATION/SELECTION PROCESS: This is an open competition for all artists residing in the State of New Mexico. Proof of New Mexico Tax Identification may be required. The committee will jury and recommend selections to the full Arts Board.

Eligibility: Legal residents of New Mexico residing in the Greater Albuquerque area, including Rio Rancho, Corrales, Los Lunas and the East Mountains are eligible to submit. The normal restriction (artists having a current City of Albuquerque Public Art contract are not eligible for another for one calendar year) is waived for this project. City employees and their families are eligible to submit works of art for purchase under $1,000.

Materials: Two-dimensional art appropriately framed as described above readied for security installation hardware.  For large oil or acrylic paintings some form of glazing for protection of the work is needed if not under glass.  For two-dimensional works see framing instructions above. Works within a series, i.e. diptych or triptychs can be submitted and will be counted as one submission.

Artists must submit the following items for the project.
1.) A statement or description of the proposed works, which includes a description of the artwork. Not to exceed 500 words.

2.) A current resume including statements regarding your artwork/art education and past work, etc. Not to exceed 500 words.

3.) Up to two (2) artwork submissions for consideration. Limit to two images for purchase. The intent is for artists to submit exceptional artworks that best represent the artistic careers of those working in the visual arts in NM.
