GALLERY DESCRIPTION

311 Gallery, 311 West Martin Street, Raleigh NC has been bringing color to Raleigh’s Warehouse District since 2007 and is now in the center of the vibrant art hub that grew up around us.

Our Main Exhibition Gallery hosts monthly shows: either a national show of juried works or the works of invited artists. In addition, 12 artist studios exhibit the works of over 30 resident artists throughout the year. The 311 Gallery Gift Shop offers smaller works by resident and invited artists, including ceramic, glass and wood artists, as well as painters using a variety of media.

311 Gallery is centrally located 3-4 blocks from the Raleigh Convention Center and major downtown hotels. Our consistent advertising in the Art Guide, Raleigh Convention & Visitors Bureau information, TravelHost Magazine, etc., and our reputation for presenting a wide variety of styles all bring us visitors and purchasing patrons from throughout the Southeast, including Charleston, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Richmond, and indeed from across the North and South Americas.

The main goals of our juried shows are to introduce Mid-Atlantic art lovers to the diversity of work produced by contemporary artists and to inspire both artists and art lovers to strengthen our appreciation of all things art.

SELECTION AND AWARDS

Selection for invitation into the show will be based upon the average rating of three jurors based upon photographs of artworks submitted by entrants. The number of works chosen in past shows has varied between 65 and 130, depending upon the sizes of the higher rated works. When appropriate, we will double stack smaller pieces to be able to accept as many high-quality pieces as can be effectively curated into a great show. Final judging for awards will be made by the three jurors after the invited artworks are available for viewing at the gallery.

1st Place $350: The First Place Winner will also be invited to participate in the 311 Gallery 2018 Juried Show Winners Exhibition in February 2020.

2nd Place $250; 3rd Place $150; Three Honorable Mention awards $50 each

Insurance for artwork

311 Gallery will not be responsible for damage or theft of works of art displayed or stored in, or shipped to or from, 311 Gallery. Exhibiting artists must provide their own desired level of insurance coverage.

Character of accepted artwork

Art shall conform to the description of the show and be suitable for a family-friendly audience. Frontal nudity (exposed female breasts or genitalia of either sex) is not acceptable.

Two-dimensional works shall be appropriately wired on D-rings, and ready to hang for Exhibition. For guidance on how to securely wire 2-D art for hanging, see the handout on properly wiring 2-D art for hanging at the EXHIBITIONS page on our website www.311Gallery.com.

NOTES:

{C}1.     Single hangers and unprotected pastels are NOT allowed.

2.     We use traditional wall hangers to secure 2-D art to the walls. Wiring should be tight to keep the piece against the wall for best viewing, but it must be loose enough to allow a gallery assistant to reach behind and hang the work. The apex of the wire when hanging must be 1.5 inches or more below the frame or stretcher bar to allow space for the hanger and keep the hanger from pushing the piece away from the wall.

Three-dimensional work must sit solidly on a flat surface or be properly wired for hanging on a wall.

If works are not adequately prepared for display, they will be withdrawn from the show and declined.

Acceptance of artwork

REMEMBER: ONLY TWO WORKS OF ART MAY BE ENTERED. 311 Gallery reserves the rights to (1) decline any entry, (2) limit the number of accepted works per artist, and (3) withdraw any work from the exhibition at its discretion. REMINDER: 311 Gallery is a general audience/family-friendly venue and accepted art must be appropriate for that audience.

Packing and delivery of accepted artwork

Hand delivery of invited artwork to 311 Gallery must occur between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm on Wednesday-Saturday on the scheduled arrival dates—see the Schedule above.

Shipped artworks must arrive in reusable packing and containers made expressly for shipping art between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm on Wednesday-Friday on the scheduled arrival dates—see the Schedule above. NOTE: Ground shippers do not deliver on Saturday, so plan your ground shipments to arrive at the earliest on Wednesday and the latest on Friday. We suggest contacting your shipper to determine when to deliver your work to the shipper to allow them to arrive in a timely manner.

Put both your name and artwork name on your box, so we know which box goes with what artwork!

Reusable packing and containers are required because 311 Gallery will repack each piece in its original packing for return shipping. Art shipping boxes allow the art to be removed without cutting or other destruction of return-packing materials and allow us to easily repack it in the original packing and container.

NOTE: if you do not have suitable art shipping containers, FEDEX and UPS have relatively inexpensive art shipping boxes that protect 2-D art during shipping and can be reused for several shipments. These boxes suspend the art in the center of the box away from the sides and corners. More durable (and expensive) art shipping boxes with even more protection are available from many art supply houses, as well as FEDEX, Uline and other packaging suppliers (not UPS at this time). They may be reused for many shipments and are very cost effective if you ship items of the same (or smaller) size often.

Commercially made art boxes suspend the art in the middle of the outer box, away from the sides and corners. They do not require the use of bubble wrap or any other extra protection. We have recently had a sad occurrence where an artist used the correct box, but then wrapped the painting with so much bubble wrap that, when something bumped the box, the bubble wrap transferred the pressure to the glass and broke it. It did not appear that the glass would have broken if the artist (or shipper) had not wrapped the painting in bubble wrap. NOTE: we do not recommend shipping glass; acrylic or similar glazing is much safer, if glazing is required.

If you do not ship your art in a commercially made art shipping box, it will take us several times the length of time to remove and repack the art as it would with an art shipping box. Unfortunately, we can no longer afford the staff time to open and repack other boxes without charging you for the extra time involved. If your self-made or shipper-made box is so made that it will take us longer than removing/repacking a commercial art shipper box, we must charge you an extra $20 payable before your art is displayed in the show. Therein lies the rub: we will be opening boxes right up until the time that the jury arrives to judge the awards. We may not have the time to correspond with you and get your agreement to make the payment before awards judging. NOTE: we recognize that special boxes may have to be made for shipping 3-D art, so careful thought to making such special boxes in such a manner that the art is easy to remove and easy to repack is critical. Experience shows that the art is also better protected in the process.

If you or your shipper must make a box to fit your art, you must adhere to the following restrictions.

DO NOT PACK ART IN LOOSE FOAM PEANUTS or include loose foam peanuts (or hand cut foam sheets) anywhere within the outer package. Such packages will be returned unopened. Experience unfortunately shows that (1) foam peanuts do not adequately protect art from shifting, (2) art cannot be removed without scattering peanuts and requiring cleanup, (3) the art itself is in jeopardy due to the static cling adhering parts of peanuts to objects in the area (we have seen photographs rejected for awards because of specks on the photograph that were later determined to be specks from foam peanuts and we have seen art damaged by peanut abrasion), and (4) the art is practically impossible to return into the packaging in a secure manner. Further, the majority of the works of art that have arrived in damaged condition have been packed in loose peanuts (or other loose packing that can easily shift). Having said that, we have seen art successfully packed in a set of closed plastic bags of loose peanuts that prevented the art from shifting, kept the face of the art in the middle of the package, and did not allow loose peanuts to escape. We cannot accept items packed in loose foam peanuts!

If tape is used to secure wrapping inside of a shipping carton, DO NOT USE CLEAR PACKING TAPE, use blue painter’s tape that can be seen, easily removed, and easily reapplied. A little tape goes a long way. It only takes a few short pieces to secure several layers of bubble wrap—if it really requires any at all. If you wrap your artwork in so much tape that we have difficulty in safely cutting it to unwind bubble wrap, we will not open it—we will return it to you as is. We cannot and do not accept liability for damage to artwork that occurs while trying to unwrap it.

If you choose not to use a box that is made for shipping art, you can still pack it safely with minimal effort in a manner that is both easy for us to remove and easy for us to repack. The edges of frames and paintings can be protected easily with sections of foam pipe insulation (or swimming noodles). Pipe insulation comes pre-slit to slip over the pipe, so it easily slips over the side of a frame. If the ends are cut at 45 degrees with a utility knife, the frame is completely covered. The basic idea is to keep the art substrate in the center of the box to limit the opportunity of being damaged if a box is punctured or dropped.

In many cases, good protection for 3-D art is achieved by supporting the art with plastic bags filled with structural foam, such as that commonly used to fill cracks around windows and doors in new home construction. Once the foam sets up, it doesn’t settle like foam peanuts will do and the hard foam will keep the art from moving around in the box during shipment.

Pickup of unsold artwork or return shipping

At the conclusion of the show, unsold artwork must be picked up on the scheduled pickup date (see Schedule above) between 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm, unless other arrangements have been made. Artists who wish to have their artwork shipped back to them must provide prepaid return shipping labels, including any desired insurance. DO NOT PREARRANGE PICKUP BY A SHIPPER FOR THE RETURN; when all return packages for a show are packed, we will arrange for a pickup from the appropriate shippers.

Prepaid return shipping labels should be sent inside the box on the end/side to be opened. NOTE: if the art is sold, you should be able to get a refund for the unused shipping label. If you delay in getting the label to us, and the label is not here when we have UPS, FEDEX, and USPS come by to pick up return art, we will have to store the art until the pickup date for the next show or make a special trip to your shipper; in either case, we must charge you a $20 storage or shipping transfer fee before returning your work.

Shipping insurance each way is the responsibility of the artist. 311 Gallery will not accept monies for shipping and is not responsible for works lost, stolen, or damaged once picked up by the shipper.

Check your local shipper for prepaid return labels, call tag systems, and printable internet shipping labels.

Unsold art will begin to be packed the day after the exhibition closes, but the process may take multiple days.

Due to the lack of available storage, unsold artworks not picked up by the deadline or for which prepaid labels have not been provided by the pickup deadline are subject to a storage fee of $10 per week or portion thereof, unless other prior arrangements have been made. Unsold artworks not picked up or for which prepaid return labels have not been provided within 60 days of the pickup date shall become the property of 311 Gallery and will be donated to the Visual Art Exchange for its annual art auction to support its programs. Your entry of art for consideration for this show means that you understand and concur with these requirements. We appreciate your understanding of the need for timely pickup of unsold works.
