The North Carolina Statewide Pastel Juried Exhibition is a collaboration of three pastel societies: The Appalachian Pastel Society (APS), the Pastel Society of North Carolina (PSNC) and the Piedmont Pastel Society (PPS). Our mission is to inspire artists, to enhance the public’s appreciation for the lasting value and beauty of the medium of soft pastels, and to establish North Carolina as an emerging cultural market. The 2019 show is hosted by the Appalachian Pastel Society. The exhibition returns this year to the splendid Hickory Museum of Art.


This call requires membership in one of the three North Carolina pastel societies at the time of the show. You do not have to be a North Carolina resident to become a member. JUROR

Lyn Asselta is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, an International Association of Pastel Societies Eminent Pastelist, a member of the Salmagundi Club, Member of Excellence in the Southeastern Pastel Society and the founder of the First Coast Pastel Society in northeast Florida. Asselta’s pastel landscapes have been shown in exhibits throughout the United States, in China and in France, where one of her paintings was selected for the permanent collection of the Musee de Pastel in St. Aulaye.  

Lyn will teach a workshop at the Hickory Museum of Art, April 30 through May 3, 2019.  Workshop information and registration links are on the APS website home page  www.appalachianpastelsociety.org

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • 80% of the exposed surface must be dry pastel.  No oil pastels. 
  • Size limitation is 42 inches in either direction including frame.  Over-sized work will not be hung.
  • Must be entirely the work of the artist and not copied from other artists’ work, photos or publications.
  • Must not have been done under supervision (as in a workshop or class).
  • Must not have been exhibited before in a previous North Carolina Statewide Exhibition or reworked.
  • Must have been completed within the last five years.
  • Must not be glazed with a finished surface of matte acrylic, resin, or solvent varnish.

ENTRY FEE

  • $35 for up to two images (as many as two images per artist can be accepted into the show by the juror)
  • Entry fees are non-refundable
  • ONLINE ENTRY ONLY at www.callforentry.org

ENTRY PROCESS

  • Online entry using CaFE.  Go to www.callforentry.org and sign in or create a user account.
  • Up to 2 images (each artist may have up to 2 paintings accepted to the show)
  • JPEG format
  • 72 dpi, set at 1920 pixels on longest side, file size maximum 3 MB
  • No file-naming restrictions.  Juror will not see the file name.
  • Images must not show mat, frame, etc., and must be an accurate representation of the artwork

  • Entrants failing to deliver accepted work will be denied eligibility to NC Statewide show for 2 years.

LIABILITY

Artists are responsible for providing their own shipping costs and insurance to and from the Hickory Museum of Art. All artwork will be insured upon reception and until they are picked up from the museum by the artist, a representative, or a shipper.
All reasonable care will be taken in the handling, transportation, storing and installation of accepted paintings by APS and the Hickory Museum of Art. APS and its volunteers do not accept liability for damage or loss during transportation and/or storage.

PRESENTATION OF ARTWORK

  • Professionally framed under glass or acrylic
  • If mats are used, they must be white or off-white.  Paintings framed with colored mats will not be hung.
  • Ready to hang with flat hooks and strong wire.  No saw-tooth hangers.  No clip frames.
  • APS reserves right to refuse any painting that does not meet professional gallery standards

 
DELIVERY AND PICKUP

            Delivery and pickup instructions, packing suggestions and labels will be sent to those accepted to the show.
 
SALES

  • Price may not be changed after submission
  • The Hickory Museum will receive a 30% commission from sales.
  • The Museum will administer the sales of paintings and the payment to the artists.
  • All entries must either have a sale price or be marked not for sale (NFS). If paintings are NFS, you will need to declare an insurance value.   No works marked POR will be accepted.
  • Catalog information and gallery tags will be produced directly from your entry.  Spelling, price, and capitals in names and titles will be exactly as you type them. Please enter your information accordingly.
  • No painting may be removed before the end of exhibition.
  • Buyers must pick up the paintings at the end of the exhibition or arrange and pay for shipping.

ENTRY PAYMENT

Entry fee is paid online by Visa/Mastercard on callforentry.org when completing submission.  If you prefer to pay by check, you can put a check-mark in the “pay by check” option online when finishing your application on callforentry.org. Then mail a check for $35, payable to “APS” by the postmark deadline of March 15, 2019 to:

As a condition of entry to the 2019 NC Statewide Exhibit, the submitting artist agrees to the terms and conditions stated herein including granting permission to the three NC pastel societies and the Hickory Museum of Art to reproduce the accepted paintings on their websites, for advertising and promotional purposes only. No images will be used or published for any other use by the listed organizations.
