Submitted Work Requirements

We are seeking submissions of recent original or period reproduction furniture and furniture-related decorative arts, of any style, which display fine craftsmanship along with the skill and spirit of their maker.

This show will be unusual in that the display case is just 18’ long x 3’ wide x 6’ tall, so priority will be given to pieces appropriate to the display potential of the case.

At the time of submission, all works must be complete and ready for exhibition.

The work must have been created by the maker whose name appears on the entry form.  If there are other contributors to the work, they must be acknowledged in the Application Questions section.  Collaborative works should include short bios of each maker in the ARTIST STATEMENT section.

The use of CNCs and Lasers is welcomed, but use of these must facilitate an original creation of the maker and must be noted in your application (see Application Questions).

Who Can Enter?

Exhibitors must be members of the Cumberland Furniture Guild; however, the $70 entry fee includes a one-year Guild membership.

How Many Entries Can I Submit?

Each applicant may submit up to two pieces with up to three digital images per entry (2 pieces maximum, 3 images maximum per piece).

IMPORTANT:  If submitting two works, please upload all images for the first work before uploading the images for the second work.  This will facilitate sorting the images for the Juror’s review.

Is There a Fee?

For non-Guild members, there is a $70 entry fee, which includes a one-year regular membership in the Guild.

For Guild Regular members in good standing, the application fee is $35.

For Guild Supporting members in good standing, the fee is $0.

For Regular and Supporting Guild members, the Guild will issue coupon codes which should be entered by the applicant to reduce their application fee.

All entry fees are non-refundable.

The application process requires payment by credit card.  If this creates a challenge for the applicant, please contact the Guild at info@cumberlandfurnitureguild.org with the subject line EXHIBITION QUESTION.

How Do I Enter?

All entries must be made through this callforentry.org application.

If you experience difficulties completing the application or uploading images, please contact the CaFÉ support staff first at callforentry.org.

Delivery and Return of Works

All work must be hand delivered to the Nashville International Airport on Tuesday, August 27, 2019.

All work must be picked up from the Nashville International Airport on Wednesday, December 4, 2019.

Curation, Display and Mounting Works

The show will be curated by Arts at the Airport and the Cumberland Furniture Guild, who shall have sole discretion for the placement of work in the display.

All works must fit within the physical limitations of the display case, as described above.

Arts at the Airport will provide typical display pedestals; however, the maker must provide materials and instructions for any wall or ceiling hangings or unusual installation requirements.

Arts at the Airport will provide signage and artwork labels.

Sales

Works may be offered for sale, but any works which sell through this exhibit or during a 30-day period after closing will be subject to a 25% commission to Arts at the Airport, the 501(c)(3) through which this program is offered.

The Cumberland Furniture Guild will not take any commission on sales from this exhibit.

There is no requirement that your piece be for sale; however, the insurance value for the piece must be identified in the Application Questions section.

Who Are the Jurors?

Two distinguished Jurors, Mary Grissim and Paul Sasso, will choose the works to be included:

  • Mary Grissim is a multi-talented, experienced Curator, Director, Educator and Artist. She is currently Curator of Arts at the Airport, and has worked with many area arts organizations, including the Nashville Jazz Workshop, Tennessee Craft, and the Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art. She is also a successful artist in her own right.
  • Paul Sasso moved to the United States in 1978 from Ontario, Canada to study sculpture and painting at the University of Tennessee. He graduated in 1981 with an MFA and began teaching at Murray State University in Kentucky where he developed the furniture program. He retired from teaching in 2008. His work has been acquired by many important collectors and museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, and the Gulf Coast Museum of Art, Largo, Florida.

What is the Judging Procedure?

All work will be judged based on the submitted images without identification of the maker.

Consideration will be given to the submitted work's connection to Tennessee.

Due to the unusual space limitations of the display case, certain works juried into this 2019 Cumberland Furniture Guild Flying Solo Exhibition may not then end up being included in the display due to size or placement challenges.  Any work falling into this category will automatically be juried into the currently scheduled Cumberland Furniture Guild Exhibition in the fall of 2020 at the Customs House Museum in Clarksville, Tennessee. Alternatively, if the entrant chooses, the entry fee will be waived for that show on one piece, or their entry fee refunded.
