THEME

The Colorado Photographic Arts Center invites photographers to submit work that addresses the question "who are you?".

Identity is forged by powerful internal and external forces that may be summed by the dichotomy "nature vs. nurture." That tidy description elicits numerous questions: is identity defined by ethnicity or race? Is it influenced by where we live? Is identity performative, demonstrated through personal or cultural rituals including food, clothing, and music? How does gender influence identity? Is it strictly personal, or do we derive identity through national association or ideology? Alternately, what does it mean to resist physical and psycho-social constructions of identity? For this expansive open call, we invite you to submit work that reflects your understanding and/or interrogation of identity, how it is constructed or deconstructed, and what bearing identity has in ongoing cultural dialogues.
