2019 Stuart Artist-in-Residence
School of Design
South Dakota State University
Brookings, South Dakota

Residency Term: September 9-October 4, 2019

Honorarium: $2,500

Applications for a 4-week artist-in-residence are now being accepted from visual artists working in any discipline, including interdisciplinary approaches. The residency selection committee specifically encourages artists whose primary role is to create and develop artwork independently while being willing to discuss his/her project conceptualization and visual progression with School of Design students, faculty, and the community during studio hours and public events. It is not intended that the selected artist teach or provide workshops.

Given South Dakota State University’s commitment to “extend the reach and depth of the University by developing strategic programs and collaborations”, the residency selection committee especially encourages applications from artists who are currently residing and working outside and beyond the South Dakota region.

Residency Provides: During the residency the artist will be provided 24/7 access to a 1,200 sq. ft. lockable studio space that normally functions as a gallery. The resident studio is located on campus within an academic environment. The resident artist will also be provided a private fully equipped one-bedroom apartment located a short walk from the studio. Use of university equipment and space within teaching studios is limited. Therefore, applicants should list specific studio furniture and basic equipment needs in their project intent statement.

Residency Requirements: The resident artist is expected to maintain a full-time working schedule that includes an open door policy, based on normal business hours and evening studio art courses, to share the development of his/her project with students, faculty and the regional arts community. The artist will also be required to give a public lecture of her/his artwork. The residency will culminate with an open studio event and/or exhibition featuring the residency project in the School of Design Ritz Gallery.

Artist Responsibilities: Transportation, shipping, materials, supplies, meals and personal expenses are the responsibility of the artist.

Application Process: Submit application through www.callforentry.org
Include: Residency project intent statement (one page limit), resume not exceeding three pages, list of three professional references, and 10 images of completed artwork and/or images relevant to statement of project intent. Residency project intent statement should include applicant’s 4-week plan to develop/produce artwork independently. For audio and/or video, please provide web-link information within resume. Application process closes on April 2nd, 2019 at 11:59pm, Mountain Time Zone (Denver, CO, USA).
