Call for Artists: Loss, Redemption, and Grace

What is your response to grief? Have you spoken to loss through artistic expression? Have you been inspired to answer injustice with the energy of creation?

This juried exhibition at EBD4 in Atlanta, invites artists to share their own interpretations and expressions of how they have channeled creative forces in response to loss, redemption, and grace.

The exhibition runs from June 8 – July 20, 2019, with an opening reception on Saturday June 8. Elyse Defoor, director of EBD4, will serve as curator. Jerry Cullum, Ph.D., and Teresa Bramlette Reeves, Ph.D., will serve as jurors. Three cash awards totaling $800 will be given for Best in Show, 1st place and 2nd place.

Where:
EBD4 is a creative industrial space that brings a fresh, creative vibe to metro Atlanta’s contemporary art scene. It offers a platform to examine edgy, daring and thought-provoking contemporary artwork often unavailable in a traditional gallery setting.

Curator:  Elyse Defoor
In her 25-year art career, Defoor’s focus as a curator has been to usher both emerging and under-represented artists in solo and group exhibitions at EBD4 and the Arts Exchange. Her own work has been exhibited in Atlanta, New York City, and throughout the American South. In 2018, she presented a large-scale installation of “Unbridled” in a solo exhibition at the City of Atlanta's Gallery 72.

“Loss, Redemption, and Grace” stems from Elyse Defoor’s first solo exhibition, “Talking Back”, at Callanwolde Arts Center in Atlanta. This series was an exploration of grief following her brother’s murder in 1999. Now, as she marks the 20th anniversary of his senseless death, she is inviting others to share artistic interpretations relating to their own response to personal or public loss as pathways to redemption and grace.

Jurors:
Teresa Bramlette Reeves, Ph.D.: Bramlette Reeves is director of curatorial affairs at the Zuckerman Museum of Art at Kennesaw State University. Her education in curatorial work began in graduate school at Virginia Commonwealth University where she worked for the Anderson Gallery. This experience led to jobs in New York at Artist Space, the Guggenheim Museum and the New Museum of Contemporary Art. She was formerly the assistant director of The New York Kunsthalle and gallery director and curator for the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, as well as a Senior Lecturer at Georgia State University. In addition to her curatorial and teaching experience, she is a visual artist whose work has been exhibited and represented internationally.

Jerry William Cullum, Ph.D.: Cullum is an award-winning art critic and curator whose reviews and essays have appeared in Art in America, ArtPapers, ArtsATL and Burnaway. The first recipient of the Nexus Award from The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Cullum holds a BA in Literature from Eckerd College, a MA in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Ph.D. from Emory University’s Institute of the Liberal Arts. An accomplished poet, his work has been published in numerous printed poetry collections and audio presentations.
