Project Summary
ConsultArt, Inc. is seeking qualifications from artists or artist teams for the commission of between three and four site-specific permanent outdoor sculptures.  The commission will be installed and integrated into a landscape/hardscape plaza situated at the primary public entrance to the new headquarters of Norfolk Southern Corporation in Midtown Atlanta, GA.

Sculpture Goals and Considerations

  • Explore themes of timelessness, forward momentum, and ingenuity.
  • Installation should create a narrative between pieces.
  • Human-scaled

Budget
The total budget is $750,000 towards the commission and acquisition of between three and four site-specific permanent outdoor sculptures. All costs associated with each sculpture should be inclusive of, but not limited to, artist design fee, structural engineering, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel to and from the site, per diem expenses, project documentation, contingency to cover unexpected expenses and any other costs related to each sculpture.

Selection Process
Up to eight semifinalists will be selected to develop design proposals for projects in the landscape/hardscape area. Each semifinalist artist/team will be paid a $2,500 honorarium for the creation of a design proposal. An Art Acquisitions Committee will select one artist or team from the semifinalist design proposals for commission and acquisition for the landscape/hardscape area.

Eligibility
The RFQ is open to artists or artist teams over the age of 18 who currently reside in the United States of America. 

Application Deadline
All applications must be submitted via email by 10:00pm EDT on Friday, May 17, 2019. No exceptions. A confirmation email will be sent upon receipt of completed applications.

Application Process

  1. Up to 10 digital images of previously completed artworks including an image annotation sheet. If artwork is kinetic, video content may be submitted in addition to images.
  2. A current résumé that outlines your professional accomplishments as an artist. Your resume may be any length, but the committee members are only required to read to the first two pages.  If applying as a team, please submit a resume for each artist, with the lead artist first.
  3. A statement of interest of 250 words outlining the artist’s interest in the specific opportunity and the artist’s experience working on projects of this scope.

Selection Criteria:
The committee will use the following criteria in the selection process:

  • Submittal of all required application materials as outlined in this RFQ; 
  • Originality: creativity and uniqueness demonstrated in previous projects; 
  • Quality and craftsmanship exhibited by past work; 
  • Maintainability: structural and surface soundness, durability and resistance to vandalism, weathering, excessive maintenance, repair costs; 
  • Appropriateness for placement on an urban pedestrian site, including ability for artwork to withstand public interaction; 
  • Public safety; and 
  • Feasibility: artist's proven track record/ability to complete the work on time and within the budget.

All semifinalist artists will be required to execute a Non-Disclosure Agreement before proceeding with concept development and the disbursement of the honorarium.

Norfolk Southern will provide semifinalists with a per diem to cover the costs of travel and accommodations in Atlanta, GA.  One finalist will be selected for commission and acquisition from the semifinalists’ proposals.
