GearBox Gallery invites submissions to our 2019 juried exhibition, Art + Movement, a theme inspired by questioning how art made in our current divisive state of cultural, political, and religious points of view will be regarded historically. Art movement is defined as a tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy or goal, followed by a group of artists during a restricted period of time. Art history points to how various movements in art, referred to as isms (impressionism, cubism, fauvism, expressionism, surrealism) were reflections of the views of their time. Additionally, of course, movement also refers to a principle of composition in art and can be used to cause a visual tempo or beat.

Juror:  Maria Porges

Maria Porges has pursued dual practices as an artist and a writer, teaching in both areas at CCA, principally in the Fine Arts graduate program since the late ‘80s. Her exhibition career of image/text sculpture and drawings has included solo shows at galleries, museums and alternative spaces. Her critical writing has appeared in many publications, including Artforum, Art in America, Sculpture, American Ceramics, Glass, the New York Times Book Review, and a host of now-defunct art magazines. She has also authored essays for more than 100 exhibition catalogues and has twice been in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts.

In 2016, she  began the blog, wordsaboutart.com, where she writes about artists and visits to (unusual) museums and posts short fiction about the art world. She has written three artist’s books; Shortest Stories, coming out in 2019, consists of 100 microfictions paired with 100 collages, in which the pairing are intended to work together to create a narrative whole, rather than explaining or illustrating each other.
