Nationally Juried Exhibition
Tubac Center of the Arts presents Ex Voto, a nationally-juried exhibition featuring contemporary interpretations of Ex Votto art. Ex Votos are votive offerings to a saint or divinity. Artists are asked to create innovative, contemporary notions of Ex Votos.
Ex-Votos or Ex Voto
The term is short for ex voto suscepto (from the vow made) or in gratitude or devotion. Ex Votos take a wide variety of forms. They often include texts explaining a miracle attributed to saints or other divinities. The tradition is quite old, going as far back as Abydos in Ancient Egypt.
Artists are asked to imagine contemporary ex votos. From the Mexican tradition, many depict dangerous incidents or challenges which the offeror survived. The rich folk art tradition of Ex Voto is paralleled in other countries, including Italy and Spain. While there are a variety of types of Ex Votos, this exhibition seeks contemporary views of gratitude or plaintive assistance in two-dimensional representations. Think outside of the tradition, however, and consider smaller 2D work with visuals and text wherein the notions of help or gratitude are depicted.
