Innovations in Fiber
A Mixed Media Exhibition
10th Annual Regional Juried Show
September 28 - November 9, 2019
South Haven Center for the Art, South Haven, Michigan
Sunday, August 25, 2019 at 11:59pm
Two entries per artist, one detail allowed
For this show, we are looking for work that uses fiber-both natural and manufactured- to push the old limits of creative expression. The works must include fiber as content as well as at least one fiber process or technique. Fiber can include such things as paper(traditional, handmade or non-fiber such as Yupo, Stone paper and Evolon) fabric(natural or synthetic) plastic, plastic bags, wire, bamboo, wool, plant or food materials, string, yarn, sticks, etc. Fiber processes can include sewing, knitting, weaving, spinning, felting, basketry, embroidery, netting, etc.
This call is open to all artists 18 years of age or over in the following states: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. All work must be the original work of the artist and completed in the last three years. The use of fiber is an integral part of the human story, both as a survival imperative and as an expression of humankind’s innate creativity. The work of creating clothing, implements, books, art and home goods by hand has been usurped by the easy availability of mass produced goods and images. In this frenzied age of non-stop activity and work, creativity and expression is becoming a roadmap back to our essential humanity.
Size limits: 2D - 72”high x 55” wide maximum
3D- must fit through standard doorway, max. 50lbs.
No installations or ceiling hung work.

Jurors for the exhibition are:
JUDY WENIG-HORSWELL
Judy’s farm background and her BFA (painting) and MFA (metals) from Bowling Green State University combined with teaching art at the high school level and at Goshen College have fed and supported her engagement with a variety of media. She has studied and traveled in Europe, Japan, Latin America, Cote d’Ivoire, and Morocco to gain further experience and insight. She co-founded the Goshen Jewelers Guild in 2012 and is an active member of the Indiana Women’s Caucus for Art. Her focus has been lost wax casting of jewelry and small sculpture with significant periods of involvement with watercolor, drawing, and ceramic sculpture.
HELEN GEGLIO
Helen Geglio received her BFA in studio art from the University of Michigan and also holds an MS in education from Indiana University. In her work as an artist, she creates fiber and mixed media artworks, and has been represented in local, regional and national exhibits. Most recently her work has been selected for Artist as Quiltmaker 2018, Quilt Visions: Conversations 2018, New Legacies Contemporary Art Quilts 2018, Quilts=Art=Quilts 2018, Form Not Function 2018, Focus: Fiber 2019 and Quilt National 2019.
“I often use old, repurposed materials and enjoy the idea of working with fibers that have passed through other, sometimes unknown, hands. The connection between women, work and textiles is a recurring theme in my art work. To construct my quilts, the fabrics are embroidered, layered, sometimes altered with dyes and resists, appliqued to a pieced or whole cloth backing and then quilted together with more hand stitching.”
