The Town of Davidson wishes to commission an artist or small team to create a Veterans' Monumnet sculpture and surrounding landscaping. The final decision must be approved by the Davidson Public Art Commission. Works must be fabricated in durable, permanent, outdoor media that is safe, easily maintained, and has proven its viability in public artworks. All artwork must be original. All forms of media that are appropriate and complementary to the space will be considered.
Davidson Town Hall is located in the center of town on Main Street. There is a horseshoe parking lot in fron t of the building with a grass island in the middle of approximately 40' x 120'. The island currently houses the Town's flagpole and a memorial plaque for a police officer killed in the line of duty. Davidson's annual Veterans' Day celebration takes place on the steps of Town Hall with participants seated in the parking lot.
The funds for the project are made possible through the Town of Davidson. This includes Charlotte-Mecklenburg Arts and Science Council funds, town funds derived from the prepared food and occupancy tax and private donations. A budget up to $100,000 contingent on fundraising efforts is available for one or more artowrks and landscaping. The total contract amount includes all applicable expenses, including but not limited to design fees, execution, insurance, contingency, and incidental costs, transportation, site preparation, landscaping and installation of the artwork selected. Projects proposed to exceed the budget will not be considered.
This is an open competition for professional artists from the southeast and east coast who have experience in producing and installing successful public art pieces.
The committee will evaluate responses to this call based on artists' past experience, including examples of similar works completed by the artist, statements articulating experience creating such projects, and references. From this call the Davidson Public Art Commission will skype/interview a limited number of semi-finalists before bringing a few artists to Davidson for a site visit. These artists will be asked to create a proposal.
If multiple semi-finalists are selected, they may be required to develop more specific preliminary proposals prior to final selections. If so, a stipend will be paid.
A detailed budget will be required of artists selected as semi-finalists. The detailed budget must include all expenditures in connection with the execution of the project. (Prior to submitting a proposal, it is recommended that the artists prepare such a budget to ensure the project can be executed as resented.)
One artist will ultimately be selected to develop the design, fabricate and install the artwork.
Town staff will oversee operations and administer the decisions of the jury panel.
The artist will be required to carry general liability insurance.
The Town of Davidson reserves the right to withdraw from the project prior to such time as a contract is formally entered into with the artist. Contract provisions will apply subsequent to the agreement to such by both parties.
Artists must submit the following materials:
1. A current resume including statements regarding your artwork/ art education.
2. A statement of interest in the project is required. (If you wish, you can express your intial ideas on the work of art you'll propose, but this is not required.)
3. Three references from clients on similar projects.
4. A minimum of 3 and up to 8 artwork images are required. (Please note medium, dimensions, location, and cost. Submissions without cost information will be rejected.)
The application, images and other required materials must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. (Mountain TIme) on September 30, 2019.
Questions about the project may be directed to Kim Fleming, Economic Development Manager, kdfleming@townofdavidson.org, (704)940-9622.
