ABOUT THE JURORS

Liana Bennett

Liana was born in Rhyl, North Wales in 1948.  At the age of six, her family immigrated to California where she began her passion for drawing as a young child. Her art career began early while in high school where she illustrated workbooks and painted backdrops for plays, all the while selling several of her paintings on the side. As a result, Liana won a scholarship to Chouinard (California Institute of the Arts) from Walt Disney in 1966. She then started doing large abstracts for an interior designer, continuing her studio work and commissioned portrait work.  Nine years later she began teaching acrylic painting to students.

After traveling North to visit relatives, Liana fell in love with the Northwest and chose to move to Bothell in 1983. Within a year she started her own art center called, “Arts Umbrella” and began teaching acrylic and oil painting, along with ten to twelve other artists. “Arts Umbrella” is still a thriving arts center. After 35 years in Bothell, it is now located in Kenmore, WA.

Liana has won various awards throughout her career. She was accepted into the Oil Painters of America national and regional art shows in Scottsdale and Kirkland. Her paintings have appeared in several publications including “Best of Acrylic Painting” and “100 Best Northwest Artists”. Liana has many paintings in private collections and has juried several State Wide Juried Shows in Washington.

Liana commented, “I believe art in all its varied forms, is a world of unexpected experiences.  Color, form, various mediums, and the interactions of the viewer to artwork makes the creative walk never boring, never predictable.” She hopes that in the viewing of a piece of artwork, something is felt, whether uncomfortable, pleasurable, or thought provoking.

Beverly Hanson

Beverly Hanson says that she cannot draw a stick figure but she has a passion for the arts. She travels extensively all over the world, looking for that elusive treasure: “The Perfect Picture.” Photography is now her magic paintbrush. Besides “straight” photographs, Beverly uses digital brushes to create art renderings that fit the image she captured on camera. Her favorite subjects range from nature to portraits. She studied at the Lepp Institute in California and with professional digital artist, Fay Sirkis.

Each image Beverly selects for a publication or exhibit sends her a message to either keep her digital fingers off OR to take a digital brush to give it a painterly effect. Beverly views every photo as a blank canvas and sometimes her sense of humor takes over.

Beverly has taken many paths in her life. She has written children’s stories, published in magazines and a textbook, been a Certified Financial Planner, tax preparer, an elementary school teacher, and employed as an administrative secretary for The Boeing Company.

Throughout Beverly’s career she has won several awards including 1st in Photography at the CVG Show 2018, Best of Show at Peninsula Art League and Ocean Shores and multiple sponsor awards. She also won the Gig Harbor Commission and South Kitsap Journal “Best Art Award”, and won People’s Choice at Tacoma Art Museum. In addition, Beverly’s photography was accepted into the Parklane Gallery in Kirkland, where she won “Best of Photography” in 2018.

In her spare time, Beverly designs for calendars, apparel, postcards, brochures and more for a number of entities and individuals.
