The City of Grand Junction and Downtown Grand Junction are seeking to hire an artist or group of artists, to paint a themed mural on a concrete wall as part of a renovation project of the Two Rivers Convention Center. The purpose of the mural is to help activate the west end of Main Street, one of the gateways to Downtown Grand Junction.  The Convention Center currently presents as a large, pedestrian-unfriendly mass with not much of interest for people to look at or appreciate.  The ongoing renovation project will add some color and windows and bring the scale of the building down a bit on the Main Street façade.  The mural should help to give pedestrians and even slow-moving vehicles a dynamic, interesting experience while traveling down Main Street.

Location
Two Rivers Convention Center is located on 1st and Main and is the gateway to the downtown corridor. The wall on the north side of the convention center provides a barrier to the covered parking below the building. The north wall consists of 23 concrete panels that are 9’6” each, in three sections. Each section has a staircase between it. The panels are separated by a wall notch that is 36” deep and 5” wide.

Section 1 East Side: 3 panels 29’3” by 3’
Section 2 Middle Section: 13 panels 139’ by 3’
Section 3 West Side: 6 panels 54’ by 4’
See architectural drawing for details on last page.

Design Criteria
The goal of this mural is to create a visual experience while walking. The mural should contain elements of the following:

  • Extremely colorful
  • Abstract
  • Geometric landscape
  • Modern

Designs may not include any breach of intellectual property, trademarks, brands, images of illegal activities or involve the attachment of any object(s).

The finished artwork will be in the public domain and therefore may be subject to vandalism. Accordingly, artists should be thoughtful about having large open areas in the design.
