The State of Clay is a juried show open to original, innovative ceramic work by current and former residents of Massachusetts. The aim of the show is to broaden public awareness of contemporary ceramic art and to provide a venue for Massachusetts’ clay artists. The show is hosted by the Ceramic Guild of the Lexington Arts & Crafts Society in Lexington, MA. Past shows online at www.stateofclay.com. Juror Julia Galloway will select awards in person and present a talk at the Artist Reception.  Galloway is a utilitarian potter and professor. She teaches ceramics at the University of Montana, Missoula. Julia has exhibited across the United States, Canada, and Asia and her work is included in the collections of the Renwick Gallery, Washington DC, Long Beach Art Museum, Long Beach CA, the Ceramics Research Center at the Arizona State Art Museum, American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, CA, and the Alfred Ceramics Art Museum in New York. Julia has served on the board of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and currently is on the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, Access Ceramics boards was well as a Director at Large on the National Council for the Education of Ceramic Arts (NCECA). She was awarded the unrestricted United States Arts Grant in 2018 and is a Distinguished Scholar at the University of Montana. juliagalloway.com. 


ELIGIBILITY

  • The State of Clay is open to artists over age 18 who are current or former residents of MA or who are presently working with clay in MA.
  • Work must have been completed within the last 3 years, 2017-2019.
  • Work must not have been previously displayed in a State of Clay exhibit.
  • Ceramic must be the dominant material.




EXHIBITION FAQS

  1. The State of Clay will be on display May 16 thru June 14, 2020  in the Parsons Gallery at the Lexington Arts & Crafts Society, 130 Waltham St., Lexington MA.  Gallery hours: Tues thru Sun 12 – 4; Saturday 10 – 4.
  2. Juror will choose participants from digital entries, select award pieces in person, and will present a talk at the Artist Reception. In addition to cash awards and prizes, a People’s Choice award will be given at the end of the show.
  3. All work must be for sale. Lexington Arts & Crafts Society retains 40% of the retail price/the artist receives 60%.
  4. Lexington Arts & Crafts provides insurance coverage during exhibition.  
  5. Sponsors include Lexington Council for the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council, plus numerous New England organizations and national ceramic businesses. www.stateofclay.com  
ENTRY PROCEDURE
  • Entries and fees will be processed through www.callforentry.org. 
  • Applicants may submit up to 3 entries, with one detail image permitted per entry (only if needed).  
  • Application deadline is January 10, 2020. Late deadline is Jan 14, 2020.
  • Application fee is $35. Late fee is $45. Non refundable. Credit card only.

CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTANCE
  1. Artists accepted into the show must send an email confirmation upon acceptance plus provide  a high resolution 300 dpi image of the accepted piece and a cv/bio.
  2. Accepted artwork must be the actual artwork as seen in the submitted images. No substitutions.
  3. Accepted artwork must be for sale. No price changes.
  4. Artists are responsible for shipping & insurance to and from the Lexington Arts & Crafts Society. A prepaid return shipping label must be included. Fedex or UPS only. No cash or checks.
  5. Shipped work must be sent in reusable, sturdy boxes. No loose peanuts.
  6. Late or damaged work will not be exhibited.
  7. Art damaged in transit is the responsibility of the artist and shipper.  
  8. Wall pieces must be securely wired and properly prepared for hanging.
  9. LexArt reserves the right not to display work that is unstable, differs from the accepted digital image, or lacks professional craftsmanship.
  10. Work exceeding 35 lbs. must be installed by the artist or by special arrangements with the gallery.

FEB 1      Required rsvp, bio, & 300 dpi image from accepted artists. 
MAY 4 - MAY 11    Delivery of shipped work.    
MAY 11 & 12         Hand delivered work.      
MAY 16    Exhibit opens.
MAY 17    Reception and Juror's Talk (tentative date)
JUNE 14  Final day exhibit.  Pick up of unsold work after closing.
JUNE 15  Pickup of unsold work.
JUNE 16  Return of shipped artwork.
