Carnation Contemporary (Portland, OR) is accepting entries of visual artworks that make use of image and text, text as image, and concepts of language. Entries may use text in acute, subtle, or obtuse ways and may be in any format (book, video, sculpture, drawing, print, painting, performance, etc.) Legibility of text is not a requirement, and priority will be given to works that expand the ways in which text/images are used and co-mingle in an artwork. As part of this group exhibition there will be a library/reading room, which will exhibit self published, small print publications, artist books, and poetry books.

DETAILS
  • Open to all USA based artists.
  • Call for Entry $15 fee per applicant
    • Entry fees go to support application processing fees, materials and labor for building the library/reading room, exhibition documentation, and print material fees.
 
  • One PDF which includes the following:
    • Artist Name 
    • Artist Website
    • Instagram handle (if applicable)
    • City, State of residence
    • Combined Bio & Artist Statement (300 words max)
    • CV (2-pages max)
    •  [optional] Proposal for performance works only (300 words max).
 
  • Max 5 entries (must be exact work that is available)
    • Images (of professional quality, good lighting & clarity)
      • File Type: JPEG or JPG only.
      • File Dimensions: 1,200 pixels or greater on the longest side.
      • File Size: Under 5 MB.
    • Video
      • Please include video stills as images & an external link to the video in the image description (Vimeo, YouTube, or direct website links only). CaFE charges extra for submitting video files. We have opted out of this in order to keep your application fee lower.
    • Image Descriptions
      • Please provide a description for each of the 5 entries, specifying how the work is intended to be displayed.
      • For 2D work please indicate if the work will be framed and/or how it will be displayed, along with frame dimensions and any specific hanging requirements.
      • For 3D/sculptural work, please provide dimensions and installation description.
      • For video, please explain how the work will be displayed & what equipment you will provide.

Note: Any special hanging requirements/materials must be supplied by the artist. Carnation Contemporary does not supply pedestals. Carnation Contemporary has 2 projectors, but does not supply any other audio/visual equipment.  


DEADLINES

  • All works must arrive by Nov 11
  • Exhibition Dec. 6 - Dec. 22, Opening reception Dec 7, 6-9pm
  • Return of work January 2-6

IMPORTANT NOTES
  • Artists must provide shipping costs and return shipping labels.
  • All submissions must be of actual artworks that are available from Nov. 11th to Jan. 6th.
  • Exhibition title will be announced along with artists selected Nov 11.
  • All works must be exhibition ready. 
  • Works will be accepted based on quality of work and how they might coalesce with other works chosen for this exhibition.

ABOUT THE CURATORS
Katherine Spinella, a co-founding member of Carnation Contemporary, is interested in the complex intersections of image and text in visual art. Kristin Hough is a curator and co-founder of Outback Arthouse, based in Los Angeles. Both curators are practicing visual artists.

ABOUT CARNATION
Carnation Contemporary was founded in 2018 by a collective of Portland-based artists who champion critical and contemporary artwork. It is a cooperative gallery supporting emerging and mid-career artists from Portland and the surrounding region. Members include M. Acuff, Russell Borne, Brittney Connelly, Renee Couture, Carolyn Hopkins, Matt Bennett Laurents, Jeremy Le Grand, Maria Lux, Susan Murrell, Hannah Newman, Katherine Spinella, Leslie Vigeant, Jessie Weitzel Le Grand, and John Whitten.
