Human Condition | exploring the body as subject

This exhibition will be a visual exploration of the human condition, asking artists to capture what is it that makes a person. From the classic nude, to abstract and impressionist treatments, to pieces that touch on the basic concept of humanity— a wide variety of interpretations will be included.  Beside exploring the physical form, artists are asked to consider how a person’s personality, emotions, challenges, preferences, prejudices, and experiences can be visually represented.

Works for Human Condition | exploring the body as subject will be selected based on a variety of key themes:

•    The body/portraiture
•    Representation of character and personality traits and experience
•    Narrative
•    Surprising and thought-provoking elements

These key themes offer the opportunity to compare and contrast works of different styles, intentions, and mediums. Such juxtapositions highlight the diversity of figural art, while also revealing the shared themes and connections that cut across the categories. While varied in their approaches, the works in Human Condition | exploring the body as subject will demonstrate the enduring relevance of the human figure in artistic expression.

Works may be sketches, studies, or fully developed pieces – but everything must be finished and able to hang from the wall with a wire and picture hooks. Nudes are fine, but graphic sexual or violent work will not be included due to children’s events held in the gallery.

This show is open exclusively to artists who live or work in the Washington DC metro area, Virginia, and Maryland.
