JURORS
Barbara Tyroler

Barbara Tyroler is a national-renown photographic educator and a professional portrait
artist, utilizing her experience in both to integrate aesthetic form with social advocacy.
She creates contemporary-style semi-abstracted imagery with emphasis on the figure,
working on-site in private homes and artist studios, in therapeutic aquatic classes, and
on college campuses. Long intrigued by water as backdrop, she began photographing
with instamatic cameras incorporating black-and-white and infrared, color transparency and dye transfer processes. She now favors professional digital camera gear and cotton fiber prints.

As an educational therapist and parent educator, she brings her experience to outreach projects incorporating photography as a tool for creative discussion and self-reflection.  Her work is collected and exhibited in retail and non-profit galleries, private collections, and non-traditional venues such as educational research institutes, aquatic centers, waterfront hotels, and private beach homes around the world.

She is the recipient of over 30 visual arts education grants and has served as a
photographic educator at the University of Maryland, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke
University, and currently provides private tutorials and portfolio critique.

She is currently a Member Artist at the FRANK Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC.

John Rosenthal

One of his colleagues, himself a noted photographer, referred to John as “a local legend," since to label him as a photographer is to seriously understate the breadth and scope of his body of work. He is a playwright, essayist, lecturer, PBS commentator, author and photographer of immense talent and reputation.

His photographs have been exhibited throughout the North and Southeast, with one
person shows at The National Humanities Center, The Asheville Museum of Art, The
National Academy of Sciences in Washington D.C., Panopticon
Gallery of Boston and the Center for the Study of the American South.

His work has appeared in national and international journals and periodicals and can be found in many collections including the NC Museum of Art and the Nasher Museum. He has written and lectured throughout the country and served as a visiting lecturer for five years at Duke University’s Institute of the Arts.

In 2015, his 2007 monograph, AFTER: The Silence of the Lower 9 th Ward, documenting the part of New Orleans hardest in Hurricane Katrina, was published to national acclaim. In August of 2008 an exhibit of his Lower Ninth Ward photographs, “Then, Absence,” was displayed at the New Orleans African-American Museum and Boston’s Panopticon Gallery, and The Center for the Study of the American South.

He is currently a Member Artist at the FRANK Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC.
