Background

Maitland, Fl. is a community of approximately 20,000 residents, which is located in Orange County and is just north of Orlando and Winter Park.  The region is widely recognized as the #1 tourist destination in the country and attracts over 70 million visitors annually (Visit Orlando).  Home to world-class theme parks, the area also encompasses a number of outstanding performance venues, a top-rated university, and a world-recognized hub of innovation, technology and diversity.  This particular project will be part of the public art endowment established for communities within the 21-mile stretch of the I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project.

Site

One option is that the art may be located in the right-of-way areas adjacent to I-4 within the city limits of Maitland provided that the installation does not interfere with ongoing I-4 maintenance.  A second option could be installed on top of the “landings” of a pedestrian bridge that is currently under construction and is just south of the Maitland/I-4 interchange.  A rendering of what this bridge will look like may be viewed HERE (please be sure to click on the thumbnail images relating to the Maitland Pedestrian Bridge).   PLEASE NOTE THAT NO ART MAY BE ATTACHED TO THE BRIDGE ITSELF.

Budget

$194,000 has been approved for the artwork which shall be inclusive of all associated expenses to include permitting, infrastructure, lighting, fabrication, installation, etc.  Should there be excessive ongoing maintenance that will be required to maintain the art, the City may also deduct some of this initial amount, which will be used for future maintenance.  Funding for this endowment has been provided by the I-4 Ultimate Art Endowment Committee consisting of the I-4 Mobility Partners, the Florida Deparment Of Transportation, and representatives of the joint venture of Shanska Granite and Lane (SGL) Constructors.

Artist Selection Criteria

The Public Art Committee seeks unique and creative solutions that will utilize one of the locations described above.  Artists will be evaluated on professional experience and although not necessary, experience with projects of similar size and scope could be helpful.  Artwork will be evaluated on creativity, artistic excellence, durability and compatibility.  Artworks must be able to withstand harsh Florida weather including intense sun, seasonally heavy rains and hurricane-force winds.  Consideration will be given to the materials that will be utilized for such projects and their ability to withstand such things as rust and fading.

Site Visit

Interested artists may view the potential art siting locations from nearby roads at any time.  Finalists will be invited to visit the site at a date to be determined with officials who should be able to answer any questions.

Selection Process

The five-member Maitland Public Art Committee will serve as the selection panel for this project, however, the Maitland City Commission and the I-4 Art Endowment Committee will also give final approvals for this project.  The public art committee will review artist qualifications and images of past work.  Three finalists will then be selected to provide proposals and each will be paid a stipend of $2,000 for their site-specific proposal.  The committee will recommend a winning project at the Feb. 24th, 2020 Maitland City Commission meeting.  If approved, the project will then be forwarded to the I-4 Art Endowment Committee for final approval.
