The Western European Architecture Foundation is pleased to announce the thirtieth annual Gabriel Prize competition named in honor of French architect Jacques Gabriel (1698-1782). The prize is conferred annually to a jury-selected applicant in accordance with requirements intended to provoke personal, critical responses to architectural compositions in France built between 1630 and 1930. Such interpretative studies are to be graphically recorded in freehand sketches and presented in perspective drawings reflecting the skill of the winner. Such work is to be executed in France with the advice and under the supervision of the European Representative of the Foundation.

Eligibility:
The candidate must be a United States citizen.

Procedures:
Application
All applications must be made through the online form on CaFE. Applicants must also register for the Gabriel Prize newsletter here on our website to receive important updates and information regarding the Gabriel Prize.

Initial Submission
The candidate shall submit an online entry through CaFE by January 17, 2020. 

Entry must include:

1. A resume of experiences as an artist, architect, landscape architect, or student
2. A description of the intended study, its scope and drawing media (maximum 2 pages, 12 point Times New Roman font)
3. A tentative outline of the architectural compositions to be explored (maximum 1 page, 12 point Times New Roman font)
4. Three current letters of recommendation, two of which are to be from persons familiar with the artistic skills of the candidate
5. Examples of original personal work digitized in .jpg format only (No PDF files; maximum 20)

Selection Process:
First Phase
A jury appointed by the Foundation with the majority being architects will review the submissions and select three candidates for the Second Phase.

Second Phase
A jury with the majority being architects will interview the selected candidates. Travel expenses from within the United States will be reimbursed by the Foundation.

Upon completion of its proceedings, the jury will announce the name of the winner. The winner will be expected to sign a letter of acceptance outlining the conditions accompanying the award before undertaking the proposed travel. 

Requirements: 
The winner shall agree to provide the following: 

• One perspective color drawing (20" x 30") to be completed by the end of the first month of study and presented at the summer jury review.
• One perspective color drawing (20" x 30") to be completed by the end of the second month of study and reviewed with with European representative. 
• One perspective color drawing (20" x 30") and a sketch notebook (approximately 8" x 10") to be submitted to the Foundation within two weeks of the completion of the third month of study. 

The three perspective color drawings, as well as the sketch notebook, are to be delivered to the Foundation for reproduction at the Foundation’s expense. While the sketch notebook will be returned to the winner, the three perspective color drawings are to become the property of the Foundation with all copyrights attached. Access to such documents on the part of the Foundation and the winner is to be granted to respective parties involved upon written request at any point in the future following completion of the reproduction process. The Foundation reserves the rights to publish and reproduce such documents with appropriate credit provided. 

Stipend: 
A stipend in the amount of $20,000 is intended to cover all costs of travel and study for a period of three months to take place roughly between May 1 and August 1, a time when prevailing climate and travel conditions in France are at their best. The Stipend will be awarded as follows:

• $10,000 March 6, 2020
• $7,500 following the completion of the first perspective color drawing
• $2,500 upon delivery of the three drawings and scans.

Travel Documents:
A valid passport is required. A French visa may be required for the period of study.

First Jury Meeting and notification of selected finalists.

Second Jury Meeting followed by notification of the winner.

March 6, 2020
First disbursement.

First Week of May
Start of period of study and travel.

First Week of June
Completion of the first perspective color drawing to be presented at the formal review.

June 17-18, 2020
Formal review of work in Paris.

June 28, 2020
Second disbursement.

First Week of July
Completion of the second perspective color drawing to be reviewed with the European Representative.

August 1, 2020
Completion of study in Paris. Third disbursement upon completion of final assignment and submission to the Foundation.
