20th Annual Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition

The City of Lakeland, Florida, in cooperation with the Polk Museum of Art, is accepting submissions from sculptors to participate in The 20th Annual Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition. Submitted sculptures will be juried by representatives from the City of Lakeland, the Polk Museum of Art, and members of the local art community. The top-scoring sculptures will be selected for a one-year exhibition in downtown Lakeland, Florida. Sculptures will be on loan from February 2020 through February 2021. Sculptures will be publicized and a People’s Choices Award will be given based on the voting of the community.

Details:

This call for entries is open to all sculptors working in North America.

Entries must be submitted by December 31st, 2019.

Submissions require a $25 nonrefundable applications fee per artist.

Work must be suitable for outdoor installation and must:

1. Be structurally secured and surface mounted to a concrete pad with anchor bolts or similar devices;

2. Be capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions, such as high winds, high temperatures, heavy rain, storms, etc.;

3. Be able to withstand a high traffic, public park environment;

4. Take into consideration the safety of the audience;

5. Be maintenance-free during the exhibition period.

6. Installation must be accomplished with tools provided by the artist (there will be access to a crane if notice is given in advance).

All entries must be completed prior to submission. No incomplete works, project proposals or works previously displayed will be considered.

Each artist selected for the exhibition will receive a $1,500 honorarium to cover transportation, installation, and de-installation of the sculpture, and all incidental expenses involved.

Any additional costs are the responsibility of the artist.

Sculptures MUST be installed no later than March 1, 2020. Any sculpture that cannot be installed by that time will be disqualified, and an alternate will be chosen. Accepted sculptures must be removed by January 31, 2021.

Artists may sell the work during the project period. However, the work must remain onsite for the duration of the exhibition.

City of Lakeland, FL, staff will coordinate the scheduling of sculpture installation.

Crane and City crews are only available on weekdays before 3 p.m. If a crane is required for installation, the artist MUST have the work on site at 8 a.m. on the morning of the scheduled installation.

The City of Lakeland will attempt to utilize current concrete pads if they still have structural integrity.

The City of Lakeland will provide insurance throughout the exhibition period for a maximum claim determined based on the value of each piece. Neither the City of Lakeland no the Polk Museum of Art will be held responsible for damage due to inherent vice or poor construction materials.

The winner of the People’s Choice Award will be determined by a simple majority vote via the official City of Lakeland Facebook page. (The City of Lakeland retains the right to adjust method of voting if it is deemed necesarry.)

By submitting to this Competition, the artist agrees to comply with all rules and requirements.

Selection Process:

Works will be selected by a committee composed of City of Lakeland staff, representatives from the Polk Museum of Art, and select members of the local arts community.

Award: (in addition to the $1,500 honorarium)

People’s Choice: $1000

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION:

                Images of up to three works, 3 views each, in .jpg format.

                Image list including images number, artist name, title, media, dimensions (in feet: h x w x d), date, value of the work, and other applicable notes as plan test, Word document, or .pdf.

                Current professional résumé and artist statement as plain text, Word document or .pdf.

 

SLIDES OR PRINTED PHOTOGRAPHS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. Images submitted for consideration may be used by the City of Lakeland, Florida, for publicity purposes. Submission constitutes agreement to the rules and details as published in this prospectus and to the use of your image for publicity purposes. All entrants will be notified of the results of the selection process in a timely manner. Please do not call about the status of your application. Submission materials from the selected artist will become part of the permanent record of the exhibition and will not be returned.
