 CALL TO VIRGINIA ARTISTS: This year the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) will celebrate the 25th juried exhibition of New Waves 2020. The history of MOCA has its roots in the traditions of a concerned and connected artist community. As the museum has grown and evolved, we never lost the goal of keeping tied to the talented artists who live in our region. New Waves brings together jurors who are at the top of their field with superlative contemporary artists found in the Commonwealth. If you are a contemporary artist living in Virginia, please consider applying.

New Waves 2020 will be on view March 21, 2020 – August 16, 2020.
Opening night reception on March 20th.

 Juror:  This year’s juror is Susan Thompson. Thompson is Associate Curator at the Guggenheim Museum, where she has curated several exhibitions including the two-part project Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now (2019–20); Simone Leigh, Loophole of Retreat (2019); Anicka Yi, Life Is Cheap (2017); Paul Chan, Nonprojections for New Lovers (2015). She has also contributed to such exhibitions as Danh Vo: Take My Breath Away (2018); Photo-Poetics: An Anthology (2015–16), and Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video (2014). Thompson is one of the organizing curators for the museum’s Young Collectors Council, which acquires the work of emerging artists for the museum’s permanent collection, and the for the Photography Council, which expands the museum’s holdings in the medium of photography through acquisitions. She holds a BA in art history and political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MA in modern art from Columbia University.

MOCA will notify all accepted artists NLT February 14, 2019. Accepted artists will also be listed on www.VirginiaMOCA.org.

 Eligibility: All artists currently residing in Virginia.

Submissions:  Please note submissions to New Waves 2020 exhibition will be accepted through online application only at the www.callforentry.org (CaFÉ) website.  Juror selections for New Waves 2020 are made online.

If you need help with your submission, museum staff are available to speak with you during the museum’s regular business hours. (M-F 10am to 5pm)

Eligible Artwork: All artistic mediums made between the years of 2016-2019 are accepted for review. Art exhibited in previous New Waves exhibitions is not eligible for review.

2-D work must be ready for installation and may not exceed 84 inches in any dimension, including frame. The artwork cannot exceed 75 lbs. (Please note: Sawtooth hangers are unsafe for installation in our galleries and cannot be used.)

3-D work cannot be larger than 84 inches including base and must not exceed 75lbs.

- Installations: MOCA will accept previously created installations. Images of installations can be submitted to callforentry.org. Submissions should be flexible to fit any location within the gallery. (Outdoor installations cannot be accepted.)

Video and sound works, There is a limit of 3 video/sound entries per application. Artists should list details of installation and presentation preferences in the comments section of the application.

 Fees: A non-refundable fee of $35 (credit card or Paypal) is required.

Artists are responsible for delivery and/or shipment to and from MOCA. Accepted artworks may be hand-delivered or shipped by the artist. All artworks must be packed properly for return shipping. Pre-paid return and/or pick-up is the responsibility of the artist. Return prepaid shipping label from UPS or FedEx should be enclosed.

 Liability: MOCA is responsible for insurance of all artwork while it is on premises. Artists must provide their own incoming and outgoing shipping insurance. MOCA is not responsible for damage due to improper packing or creation of artwork using non-archival or unsafe materials.

 Side Notes: MOCA reserves the right to photograph and reproduce any artwork in New Waves 2020 for publicity and educational purposes relating to the exhibition.
