The Town of Carbondale, CO Public Art Commission is seeking 15 outdoor street sculptures for the annual rotating "Art Around Town" show. The show is located on Main St., the Rio Grande Trail and the library and the sculptures will be on display for one year.

All applicants are expected to consider durability of materials and weather-proofing issues while on display in Carbondale, which fluctuate from intense cold and snow, to heat. Materials of the sculpture should be fabricated of highly durable, low maintenance materials. The sculptures will be located in high pedestrian/biking areas so consideration must be made for height, shape and sharp objects protruding. The Town of Carbondale has a strict outdoor lighting code so sculptures will not be allowed to be illuminated.

Marble bases and sculpture installation:

All sculptures will be placed on random sized chunks of Colorado Yule Marble. Each piece of marble has a custom steel plate adhered to the top of the marble. Sculptures will be tack welded to the steel plate on top of the marble, so it is imperative that every sculpture arrive for installation with a steel plate attached to the bottom of the sculpture. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made for installation.

A Public Works installation crew will assist the artist with welding, lifting, equipment (loader), labor and placement of the sculpture. Artist must be present for installation and de-installation of the sculpture. The Town of Carbondale is not able to receive sculpture shipments on behalf of an artist, and each artist must attend the installation/de-installation of the sculpture.

The Public Art Commission and invited jurists will be the selection committee for the show. Selected artists will receive a $900 honorarium at the installation of the sculpture in May. The community will vote on "Best in Show" and an additional $1,000 honorarium will be paid to the winner.

Artists Reception & Art Walk:

On June 4, 2020, the Carbondale Public Art Commission (CPAC) will host a community art walk and artist reception. This is an opportunity for every artist that is selected to speak to the community about their work. Artists are highly encouraged to participate in this event as this is a great time to market themselves, and it is the only time during the year that all artists will be together to highlight their work. There are typically 125-200 people from the community that participate in the art walk. An Artist Reception will follow the walk around 7:00 pm. Location TBD. On Friday, June 5, 2020, the Town celebrates First Friday with a Creative Art District theme and celebrates the new Art Around Town show.
