The Crooked Tree Arts Center in Traverse City, Michigan, seeks artists for the national plein air painting festival, Paint Grand Traverse: a plein air affair, now in its third year. Paint Grand Traverse is a week-long plein air (outdoor) painting festival and competition featuring 36 artists from across the country. The dates for this year’s festival are August 8 - 15, 2020.
The Grand Traverse region is located in northwest lower Michigan and is known the world over for its gorgeous scenery, hundreds of miles of Lake Michigan coast, and historic small towns and villages. The largest of these, Traverse City, is nestled on the southern shore of West Grand Traverse Bay, and is home to Crooked Tree Arts Center - Traverse City.

A team of five jurors, comprised of practicing artists, collectors, and curators, will review all submissions. Top scoring entries will be accepted.

Over $15,000 in cash and in-kind prizes, including a $2,500 cash prize for Best in Show.

The Crooked Tree Arts Center galleries are sales galleries and works created during the festival must be for sale. Price is set by the artist. The Crooked Tree Arts Center will retain a 40% commission on all sales.

LETTER OF AGREEMENT (for accepted and participating artists)
PAINT GRAND TRAVERSE 2020 Letter of Agreement
Event Description and Deliverables Paint Grand Traverse, presented by Crooked Tree Arts Center, is a week-long plein air painting festival and competition located in Traverse City, Michigan, and its neighboring counties. It will be held August 8-15, 2020. Over the course of the event, artists will paint in various locations throughout the area, participate in special events and sales as detailed below, and be eligible for juried awards.
Artist guidelines during the event include:
1. Artists are encouraged to interact with the public through dialogue and social media. Artists are also urged to provide their painting schedules and locations to event staff and to paint in visible and public areas as often as possible.
2. Artists will check-in and receive their orientation packet on Saturday, August 8th, 2020, at Crooked Tree Arts Center in Traverse City. Time to be announced. Canvas stamping will begin at check-in. Artists may have as many canvasses stamped as they wish. Watercolor “block pads” will not be stamped at check-in. Single sheets only.
3. CTAC is permitted to photograph the artists and their works during Paint Grand Traverse. Use of the images produced shall be for promotional and/or educational purposes. Artists will be contacted and further use arrangements shall be made if additional needs arise.
4. CTAC shall retain a 40% commission of each work sold during and from the festival. Artists will set their prices (minimum retail price of $400 with the exception of the Quick Draw Competition), inclusive of the 40% commission. Checks for works sold from PGT will be mailed by September 30, 2020. A description of the items sold will be included with the check.
5. Artists will have the opportunity to sell works in progress off the easel while out in the field. CTAC staff/volunteers will handle all transactions.
6. The week-long festival will culminate in two major sales events: 1) a gallery display and ticketed event known as The Collector’s Gala. The Gala will take place on Friday, August 14th. This event will include an awards ceremony and sale; all artists are required to attend. 2) a non-ticketed public sales event on Saturday, August 15.
a. Artists are required to prepare 5 pieces to be juried on August 14th. Up to two additional non-juried pieces may be hung and made available for sale as space allows. Artwork specifications and awards detailed at http://www.paintgrandtraverse.com/rules
b. Sales will be processed by CTAC staff and volunteers.
c. Artists are responsible for delivering their work to CTAC by 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 14. Pieces may also be delivered to CTAC throughout the week prior, during posted hours. All works must be mounted, framed, and ready to hang prior to delivery.
7. Artwork must remain on display through the public sales event on Saturday, August 15th. Artists have the opportunity to keep work on display in the CTAC galleries through Saturday, August 29th. Artists are responsible for the removal of their unsold work. Any pieces remaining at CTAC by Saturday, September 12th, shall be considered abandoned and will become property of CTAC. To this end:
i. The artist retains a royalty-free, non-exclusive use license under the copyright of the art.
ii. CTAC owns the artwork and the rights to reproduce it. Under those rights, the artist has a license to make use of the artwork for his or her purposes.
iii. Abandoned artwork will become property of CTAC and may be used or disposed of as CTAC sees fit. CTAC has no financial obligation to the artist regardless of the manner of disposition.
8. Artists shall attend and participate in the Meet the Artists Event on Sunday, August 9, 2020. This public community event will allow guests an opportunity to meet and watch the artists paint live in a picnic-type setting. Artists are required to paint on location for the duration of the event.
9. Artists shall attend and participate in the Quick Draw Competition on Wednesday, August 12, 2020.
a. Artists are required to submit 1 piece, completed in the two hours allotted.
b. CTAC shall retain a 40% commission of each work sold. Artists will set their prices, inclusive of the 40% commission. CTAC will mail checks to artists on or before September 30, 2020. The minimum retail price for the Quick Draw Competition is $200. Quick Draw pieces priced under $400 may not be included in the gallery exhibition and gala.
c. Sales will be processed by CTAC staff and volunteers.
d. Juried awards will be announced at the event.
e. All pieces should be framed.

10. Housing, if needed, will be provided in host homes, for the evening of August 8 through the morning of August 16. If the artist requires other arrangements (e.g. a hotel), it will be the artist’s responsibility to arrange and pay.
11. Artists shall provide 1) 3-5 high-resolution digital images that are representative of their plein air work, 2) a head shot or candid shot of themselves and 3) a 1-3 paragraph biography. May also include a list of recent plein air events/awards and/or publications. The artist grants permission to CTAC to use these materials for promotional purposes. Artists will provide these items no later than Thursday, January 9, 2020.
12. Artists are encouraged to link and tag Paint Grand Traverse on their social media pages.
13. Completed works will be insured by CTAC while on CTAC premises and while at the Quick Draw off-site event.
General Artwork Requirements:
1. All work must be created solely by the artist and done completely from life. 2. All paintings must begin on a blank surface (a toned background is permitted). 3. All artwork submitted for competition must be for sale.
a. Selling of artwork outside of Paint Grand Traverse events is discouraged and contrary to the spirit of the event. CTAC will manage all sales transactions. 4. You will receive title cards to fill out with title, media, artist name, site location, and price.
a. Artist sets the sales price. b. Prices are inclusive of CTAC’s 40% commission. c. Prices for paintings are not negotiable once they are made available for sale. d. Checks will be mailed to artists on or before September 30, 2020. 5. CTAC and Paint Grand Traverse staff reserve the right to disqualify any work deemed objectionable or that does not adhere to the rules and guidelines of the competition. 6.
