The ​Crooked Tree Arts Center, in Traverse City, Michigan, presents PHOTO2020, Crooked Tree Art Center’s annual juried photography exhibition. This year’s juror is Ginger Owen-Murakami. Owen-Murakami is Associate Professor of Photography and Intermedia at Western Michigan University's Gwen Frostic School of Art where she teaches photography. 

This call is open to all Michigan residents, and Crooked Tree Arts Center members, regardless of residency.  

There will be three prizes awarded: 1st PLACE: $500,  2ND PLACE: $250, 3rd PLACE: $100.

Applicant Calendar:

  • Submit entries online: November 1, 2019 - January 27, 2020.

  • Notification will be sent between February 3 - 7, 2020.

  • Work must be delivered to Crooked Tree Arts Center (Traverse City) between March 17 - 23, 2020, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. CTAC is closed on Sundays.

  • The exhibition opening reception is Friday, April 3, 2020, 6 - 8 p.m.

  • The exhibition dates are April 4 - May 16, 2020.

  • Work must be picked up between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., May 18 - 23, 2020.

  • Works delivered with return shipping arrangements will be sent by May 27, 2020.

​Eligibility

The PHOTO2020: Juried Photography Exhibition is open to all Michigan residents, and all members of the Crooked Tree Arts Center, regardless of residency, 18 years and older.  

Photography, video, and intermedia works are eligible for entry.

Owen-Murakami is Associate Professor of Photography and Intermedia at Western Michigan University's Gwen Frostic School of Art where she teaches photography. Owen-Murakami’s artwork derives imagery from narratives and themes of family history, race, gender, and culture. Her interdisciplinary practices include installation, sculpture, digital, and traditional and non-silver photographic processes. She has lectured, worked, and exhibited internationally. Awards and grants include a Photography Institute Fellowship at Tisch School of Arts, New York University, NY; Ambassador to Takasaki, Japan; Lacock Abbey, UK Residency; Atlantic Center for the Arts, New Smyrna Beach, FL Residency; Kalamazoo Artistic Development Initiative Grant, Arts Council of Kalamazoo, MI; and Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, Red Wing, MN Residency. Owen-Murakami’s exhibitions include: Houston Museum of Art, TX; Morris Graves Museum of Art, Eureka, CA; South Bend Museum of Art, IN; Tulsa Living Arts Center, OK; City of Las Vegas Charleston Heights Art Center, NV; Living Design Center OZONE, Tokyo, Japan; Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX; Stony Brook University, NY; Tilt Gallery, Scottsdale, AZ; and the Center for the Living Arts, Mobile, AL. Owen-Murakami is also in the following collections: Houston Museum of Art, TX; Mc Neese State University, Lake Charles, LA; J. Paul Getty Museum, The Conservation Institute, Los Angeles, CA; and Lacock Abbey, Lacock, UK. 

Terms and Conditions

  • The call is open to all residents of Michigan, and Crooked Tree Arts Center members, regardless of residency, 18 years and older.

  • Submissions must rely on photographic processes. (All photographic techniques and processes are eligible.)

  • Submissions must be original works created by the artist submitting the work.

  • Artists may submit up to three entries.

  • Works must not have been previously exhibited at Crooked Tree Arts Center-Traverse City.

  • Accepted works must be delivered ready to exhibit.

  • Accepted works must be labeled on the back with the artist’s name and the title(s) of the photograph(s).

  • The Crooked Tree Arts Center galleries are sales galleries and works can be for sale. Price is set by the artist. The Crooked Tree Arts Center will retain a 40% commission on all sales.

  • A non-refundable fee of $35.00 per artist is required for entry (CTAC members $20.00).     CTAC Artist Guild Members can submit their work free of charge. If you do not have your Guild Membership code, please contact tc@crookedtree.org.

  • Accepted work may NOT be removed until after the close of the show.

  • Work not picked up by specified pick-up dates becomes property of the Crooked Tree Arts Center unless prior arrangement has been made with Crooked Tree Arts Center staff. The artist forfeits any claim to the work and the Crooked Tree Arts Center cannot be held responsible for any method of disposal arising from forfeiture.

  • By submitting work to this exhibition opportunity, the artist agrees to all terms and conditions described in the exhibition prospectus.
     

Submission Procedure:

  • Submit up to three photographic images and/or videos via CaFÉ.

  • Jury will be done online. 

  • All photographic processes are welcome, but entries must be submitted online via CaFÉ, and file formats must meet CaFÉ specifications.

  • Complete the required entry forms, including medium/process, title, size, and retail price of the work. Please make sure that your email address in the application form is accurate.
