The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County is seeking sculptures and temporary installations for its annual Works in Progress IV.  The Arts Council will place 10-20 works at varied and diverse sites in downtown Fayetteville.  Works will be leased for a period of no less than one year. Lease amounts should range from $1,000 to $2,000 for a one year period.

An Artist may submit up to 4 seperate entries, with one piece of art per entry. You may upload up to 5 images of the piece of art.  


Selection Criteria

Selection criteria shall include, but not limited to: Artistic excellence, safety, suitability for public display, compatibility with site(s) available, durability and maintenance. The selection committee will make recommendations to the City’s Public Art Commission who will forward all final recommendations to the City Manager for final decisions.

Artist Benefits

Artists will have the opportunity to list the works for sale and should provide purchase price with submission and acknowledge if the lease fee will be applied towards the purchase. Artists will receive a payment of 70% on any individual sale; all sold works must remain on display for the duration of the loan period.  Artist will also receive a travel stipend of up to $500.00 for travel expenses.  

The Arts Council will carry liability and damage insurance for the course of the exhibition.  The Arts Council will publicize the exhibit though its website, brochures, social media and print advertising. There will be on-site recognition to the artist. Artist will be invited to an opening reception to recognize all artists and donors for the public art program. During the course of the exhibition there will be a People’s Choice award of $1000.00.

The Arts Council has purchased 8 pieces of public art since 2018, which has resulted in over $100,000 in fees to artist.

Proposed Timeline

Applications Open in Café:  November 11, 2019

Application Deadline:  January 17, 2020.

Artist Notification of Provisional Acceptance: February 28, 2020 (Pending approval of Public Art Commission).

Artist Notification of final City approval for placement/contracting: March 16, 2020.

Installation Period: Between April 1, 2020 and June 1, 2020.

Removal Period: Between April 1, 2021 and June 1, 2021 (One year after installation date).

Guidelines and Restrictions

 Artist is responsible for transportation of work to and from Fayetteville; the Arts Council will assist with installation equipment as agreed in advance and any necessary hands-on assistance.  Works must be installation–ready at a date mutually agreed upon by both parties.  

Works must be suitable for outdoor installation and built in a durable, stable fashion. Works must be capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions including but not limited to wind, rain, high temperature and freezing conditions.

Artwork will be installed in close proximity to the viewing public and must not pose hazards or potential for injury. Artist will inform the Council if work is non-climbable, or intentionally functional. Fragile, dangerous or inappropriate works will not be considered. Artist agrees to perform any repairs during the exhibition, if the need arises.

Upon delivery, artwork will be inspected by Council staff. If artwork is deemed structurally unsound or misrepresented, acceptance will be revoked. Artist shall be responsible for the return shipment of this artwork, and the Council shall not be obligated to the Artist for any payment, rental or otherwise, for such artwork.

Artist retains all copyright of the artwork, and Council will credit the Artist whenever possible.  Council may use images of the artwork in promotional or educational materials.

Application

Application requests must include the artist’s contact information, biography and up to 5 images showing various angles of existing piece, a short statement regarding the work and a description of its installation/removal requirements and provisions for stability to include size of concrete pad/hard surface, if required for safe installation.

Additionally, provide number of extra laborers need for installation/deinstallation and any special equipment is required. Application must include the Lease Price for the exhibition period, and sale price, if not for sale the insurance value must be listed. Please include if the lease price will be deducted from the sales price if sold during the exhibition. Arts Council will retain 30% of the sales price.

IMPORTANT: Each application represents ONE sculptural artwork, with up to five images of the work. After you finish the first application, go to checkout to submit your first entry. PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ENTER MORE THAN ONE WORK OF ART PER ENTRY FORM.

If you wish to enter additional sculptural works:
• Check out and submit the first application,
• Return to "Apply to Calls" and choose APPLY AGAIN TO THIS CALL.
• Fill out the second application.
• Save Application
• Review, then Proceed to Check out.
• Repeat the process for a third and fourth entry if applicable.
