July 15, 2020 NOTICE: Due to the double whammy of a local surge in COVID-19 and the impact it has had on national art galleries, The Studio Door has made the difficult decision to cancel the biennial 50 To Watch for 2020.  Artists who have applied have been notified and will be showcased in a regional exhibition in September without the national publication.   See www.thestudiodoor.com website for complete details.


50 TO WATCH - 2020 PROSPECTUS

50 TO WATCH - 2020 is a regional exhibition highlighting San Diego’s best visual artists running from September 5 – 27, 2020* produced by The Studio Door.  This is the third edition of this biennial event.  In addition to the exhibition, a high-end artist catalog will be produced, printed and mailed to over 1,000 galleries around the country. The Studio Door is seeking artists in San Diego County to submit their best works for consideration.

To enter, artists pay a flat rate of $25 to enter 5 – 10 pieces that represent their body of work. (2) If selected, juried artists will be required to share in the production costs of the publication with an additional payment of $350 per artist.  (3) Artwork for gallery exhibition will be jointly decided between gallery and artist

AWARDS

Award prizes for top 3 juried works:

• First Prize • $300 plus no cost to be in publication ($650 value)

• Second Prize •  $100 plus no cost to be in publication ($450 value)

• Third Prize • No cash but no cost to be in publication ($350 savings)

Awards will be announced at the public reception.  Due to publication deadlines, awards not be included in the exhibition catalog but will appear online.

Please note that entry fee is separate from awards and will not be refunded.

CATEGORIES ACCEPTED 

Painting, drawing, photo, printmaking, assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art, artist book, ceramics, stain glass and sculpture.

This exhibition does not accept jewelry or performance art. Video, film, installation and works requiring an external electrical source require gallery approval.  If you want to be considered, please contact The Studio Door at forallweknow@thestudiodoor.com before submitting to this call for artists.

Submissions must be the artist’s original work.

GALLERY & PUBLICATION

50 juried artists will be selected.  

Exhibition - One artwork will be exhibited at The Studio Door.  This work will be jointly decided between gallery and artist

Publication - Two works selected from entries will be selected by Juror, short statement by the artist and contact information will be featured in the national publication and online. The publication will be produced and mailed to over 1,000 galleries during the exhibition. Each featured artist will receive one (1) hard copy of the publication and a discount on the public price for additional copies.  Specific cost of publication will be determined by final production costs. Publications will also be made available to the public throughout 2020 as supplies last.

ELIGIBILITY 

Artist must reside in San Diego County.

ARTWORK MAXIMUM SIZE 

2-Dimensional Work: Height 8 feet, Width 4 feet - including frame 

3-Dimensional Work: Sculptural and small installation work is encouraged.  Works must be able to fit through an average doorway and not exceed 8’ in height.  If you are unsure if your work is size acceptable, please contact The Studio Door at forallweknow@thestudiodoor.com.

ARTWORK PRESENTATION 

2-D artwork must arrive 'gallery ready' and 'ready to hang' and be presented professionally. Preferably, framed artwork should be in black wood or natural wood frame. No color mats.  Exception is made if frame or mat is essential to the work of art. Due to problems with shipping 2-D artwork, no glass - plexi only.

CAFÉSUBMISSION PROCESS

All submissions for this show are handled through CAFÉ ™ (Callforentry.org).  Artists are required to sign up and create a profile on CAFÉ ™.  There is no charge for using this service.

ARTIST STATEMENT 

During the submission process, you will be asked to provide a statement about how your work relates to the title of the show.  There is a maximum of 1,000 character limit (including spaces). Please review past publications for examples.

IMAGE SPECIFICATIONS 

CAFÉ ™ provides 5 MB for the artist profile.  Image may be 1200 pixels or greater on the longest side. Anything larger will be resized.  Image may be JPG or JPEG only. Artist will upload images and information directly to their profile and reference when filling out the official call for submission.  

If you have problems uploading images, contact CAFÉ ™ directly. FYI, the most common problem is that the system will not accept images that are too small.

NOTIFICATION TO ARTISTS 

Artists will be notified by July 25, 2020. All artists who have submitted artwork will be notified by email. You may receive multiple notifications for acceptance into The Studio Door exhibition and on-line gallery. You will receive notification even if no artwork has been selected. If you do not receive notice by July 28, 2020, please check your email spam folder and contact us if you do not hear from The Studio Door. 

ALTERNATIVE ARTISTS

It is understood that due to unforeseen circumstances, some selected artists may be unable to participate after being notified.  The Studio Door will maintain a juried standby list of alternative artists.  These artists will be notified that they are on stand by and may be given the chance to participate.

NON-REFUNDABLE ENTRY FEE  & PUBLICATION COSTS

There is an initial, flat rate fee of $25 per artist.  Visual artists residing in greater San Diego are encouraged to apply.  An entry consists of five to ten submissions of images that showcase the artist’s body of work.

Artists juried into the show agree to share in the production and distribution costs of the national publication for a total of $375 per artist.  The initial $25 entry fee will be applied towards this cost.  Each juried artist will receive two editorial pages in the national publication.  Costs for the production of publications will be shared among the juried artists.

ARTIST CONFIRMATION & PAYMENT

Selected artists must submit their high resolution artwork images and make their inclusion payments no later than August 8, 2020 in order to be included in the publication.

HAND-DELIVERY OF ARTWORK 

Staff will be available at The Studio Door (3867 Fourth Avenue - Hillcrest) to accept your work on Saturday, August 30 from Noon - 7 PM during gallery hours.

SHIPPING OF ARTWORK 

No shipping for this exhibition.

PICK-UP OF ARTWORK 

Staff will be available at The Studio Door for you to pick up your artwork Tuesday, September 30. Artwork left behind may be subject to a late fee of $50 per day and/or discarded by The Studio Door.

SALES OF ART 

Artwork exhibited in the gallery - 60% of the sale will go to the artists and 40% of the sale will go to the Studio Door. Items sold must remain on exhibit for the duration of the show. The Studio Door will mail a check to the artist for any sold artwork within 30 days after the close of the show.

USE OF IMAGERY

If your artwork is selected for this program, Artists grant The Studio Door and Escondido Arts Partnership permission to photograph selected works.  The Studio Door reserves the right to use art images for marketing and publicity without compensation.
