The City will commission 3 artists for the design/installation of 3 separate-3D sculptures/pieces to be located throughout the Branhilda Richardson-Knowles Memorial Park and Historic Cemetery located at 411 SE 2nd St., Deerfield Beach, FL 33441. The park was originally a cemetery used by African Americans. Research states that the cemetery was in use from the late 1890’s to 1930’s. When the property was purchased to be developed, the City decided to purchase the property with the intention of using the site as a passive park for residents. The city's vision was to create a sacred place of solice for the community to reflect on this historic legacy and Bahamian heritage of those buried on site. The park has three main gardens to commemorate those buried there, Branhilda Richardson Knowles (a local midwife), and veterans. The artist should focus on this history and the somber nature of this green space when creating the 3D piece.

The City of Deerfield Beach is looking for three separate-three dimensional sculptures/pieces that takes into consideration the historic preservation of the land as described above. Sculptures/pieces can be created in whatever medium the artist sees best fit for their sculpture/piece. The artwork must have the capacity to receive a building permit.  Artwork attachments and/or footings must be drawn by a design professional to meet the 2017 Florida Building Code High Velocity Wind Zone. (HVHZ). 170mph wind, exposure C and ASCE 7-10.  Upon submittal, the applicant must be able to show how the art piece will be installed.

As these pieces are funded through a grant, there is a strict timeline with regards to installation of the pieces. All pieces must be complete and ready for installation by 6/1/2020.

Submitted images should be of the actual piece which the artist is proposing for installation.

The three selected sculptures/pieces will be located strategically through out the Brandhilda Richardson-Knowles Memorial Park & Historic Cemetery located at 411 SE 2nd St., Deerfield Beach, FL 33441. Please reference the attached pictures of the park.

Staff will review and inspect the design in person before and during installation once the artists/designs are selected and approved. City staff will determine the exact location of the piece within the park location and will be responsible for providing the necessary concrete base for the pieces to be secured to. The selected pieces must be ready for installation on 6/1/2020.

The City has been awarded grant funds for the selection of three art pieces for park location. Each piece is budgeted for approximately $40,000 per piece. The price provided per piece shall included insurance, shipping, installation as well as any equipment the artist may need to complete the installation.
