Call Description

The City of Aurora Art in Public Places Program and the Havana Business Improvement District are looking for existing outdoor sculpture to be considered for a sculpture exhibition on Havana Street. The Exhibit Steering Committee has selected 10 potential sites to display sculpture for one year. The ideal installation time line is September 2011.

Downtowns and main streets all over the country have been rotating major artworks in and out of the public eye to attract visitors, energize streetscapes and create great public gathering places. Commonly referred to as sculpture or art on the street programs, Havana's street sculpture project will bring the business community and the arts together for a common cause.

Sculpture Purchase, Artist Stipends and Cash Awards:
Exhibiting artists will be paid a $750 stipend for the transportation and installation of their artwork. The Aurora Art in Public Places Program will purchase sculpture from the exhibit, which will be added to the City’s public art collection.

The Havana Business Improvement District is providing funding for cash awards in the following amounts:
People’s Choice: $1,000
1st Place: $750
2nd Place: $500
3rd Place: $250

Eligibility:
• For ease of delivery, visual artists residing in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas are invited to apply.
• Sculpture must be able to be exhibited for the full length of the exhibit unless sold, in which case another artwork may be substituted with approval.
• Sculpture must be ready for exhibition and fulfill the selection and design criteria.

Selection Criteria:
• Quality of sculpture submitted.

• Size and subject matter.
• Public safety concerns.

Design Criteria:

• The artwork will be outside and exposed to the elements. It must be able to withstand the changing weather conditions of Colorado.
• Materials used must be durable, require little maintenance and be graffiti resistant.

Installation Requirements:
• Artists must transport and install their own artwork; a $750 stipend will be provided.
• All sculptures must be attached to a steel plate that will be bolted or welded to a concrete base or sidewalk, unless other design considerations are more appropriate.
