CALL FOR PUBLIC ART:

COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY | DEPARTMENT OF ART AND ART HISTORY

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Colorado State University’s Department of Art and Art History
Public Arts Mural Initiative 2020

The Colorado State University Public Arts Committee and Hatton Gallery Selection Committee at the Department of Art and Art History are requesting proposals for public works that engage diverse and challenging conversations regarding social, political, socio-economic, race/ethnicity, gender/sexual orientation and global/geo-local perspectives. With these public works, we hope to create healthy and constructive discourse around issues of diversity and inclusiveness as well as the growing need to incorporate and acknowledge the revisions within our own history as a land grant institution situated within the traditional homelands of the Arapahoe, Cheyenne and Ute Nations. This national call is for the inaugural public work in a series of artworks to be applied and installed on the building façades of the Visual Arts Building at the main campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado

The scope of the project emphasizes and recognizes the ways in which we can raise awareness and understandings of various customs, methodologies, and cultures through the arts, arts research and arts pedagogy. The committees are interested in works that engage students, faculty, staff, and the community at large. The selected works should be site responsive and easily maintainable throughout the exhibitions’ timeframe. The mural would be created with the intent to last and be displayed a minimum of three to five years. The selected project and artist(s) would interact with students, faculty, alumni, and others who may be interested in participating in the campus community. The size of the wall and maximum dimension is approximately 8 feet high by 25 feet wide and the proposed dimensions of the mural may be smaller than the maximum dimension. Artists are encouraged to present proposals involving traditional mural designs, as well as, works that may be multi-dimensional, digital, and non-traditional in format or material. Ultimately, the mural design must be applicable and well-structured for a two-dimensional wall structure and be suited for a three to five-year exhibition.

The Mural Initiative is an expansion of the programming that occurs within the Clara Hatton Gallery, the large professional gallery within the Visual Arts Building

The Clara Hatton Gallery Mission Statement is as follows:

As a vital part of the network of museum and gallery spaces at Colorado State University, the Hatton Gallery provides an important venue for exhibiting contemporary and historical art. The gallery strives to engage with the global arts community through local, national, and international exhibitions showcasing the work of emerging and established artists. At the same time, the Hatton seeks to foster the creative development of students in the Department of Art and Art History and provide an exhibition space for experimental works by undergraduate and graduate students alike. The gallery is also committed to creating an educational environment, allowing faculty to draw on exhibitions as teaching tools on topics in the history of art, museum studies, and curatorial practices.

BUDGET

The overall project budget is $8,000--$10,000. This budget does account for all anticipated costs regarding travel, lodging, per diem, supplies, and artist honorarium. Artist’s budget proposals should use this amount when planning out the usages of these funds in detail.

ELIGIBILITY

Submission is open to any artist or group of artists able to work legally in the United States and are eighteen years of age or older.

Submittals will be selected by the Colorado State University Art and Art History Department Hatton Gallery Selection Committee and once selected the proposal with the need for the approval of the University Public Arts Committee.

The Hatton Gallery Selection Committee will consider the following:

  1. Aesthetic quality and conceptual scope of the proposed project.
  2. Thematic alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the mural initiative.
  3. Technical competence and logistical viability of the plan proposed.
  4. The capacity of the project to keep its integrity with minimum maintenance resisting the most common causes of wear and damage of public art pieces set in urban environments.
  5. Relevant professional experience and qualifications of the applicants.

The committee will select a proposal based on the quality and pertinence of the project and the qualifications of the candidates, regardless of race, age, creed, color, religion, national origin or ancestry, sex, gender, disability, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or pregnancy.
