Juror: Byrd Williams IV.  At 66, Byrd is an internationally exhibited photgrapher, and the subject of two PBS documentaries as well as books.  The latest book, Proof:  Photographs from four Generations of a Texas Family, begins with his great-grandfather's photography roots in Gainesville, Texas, in 1880.  Byrd's work is in the collections of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.  His work explores the tension between the way photographs capture  moments and make them permanent, and the speed with which life passes and disappears when viewed through a stack of old images.  "For me, photography is about death". Byrd IV says in an essay. in Proof.  "There was always this urgency about it: save all historic buildings, remember all the faces, stand on all the street corners, save everyone's toilet, share my experience with postarity, I was alive goddammit."
