ABOUT THE PROJECT

TVC is working to grow the Washington County, Oregon public art portfolio. As part of this effort TVC is using grant-funded capital support to commission new works in what is being called a Musical Benches Public Art Collection (MB). TVC is working closely with arts councils, commissions, and community stakeholders to develop the scope of this collection. MB works will be strategically placed in order to highlight qualities of particular communities, enhance existing events, and/or to bring foot traffic to under-utilized areas.

 

OPEN TO

  • All Oregon-based large-scale public works artists, and/or a designer/design team contracting fabrication to Oregon-based fabricator.
  •  Priority given to Washington County, Oregon based artists.

CRITERIA

  • See Design Specifications for dimension requirements
  • The artwork should be kinetic, sound-making and/or physically engaging in some way
  • The work should be pedestrian scale and must meet all public safety and be ADA compliant
  • Artwork must be durable and free of materials that may be considered precious or fragile
  • All materials used must be suitable for outdoor setting with pedestrian, skateboard and bicycle traffic, and must be reasonably vandal-resistant
  • All materials should be as low maintenance as possible
  • The artwork must be appropriate for an all-ages audience


 

COMPENSATION

Each work, or set/pair of works, has a maximum budget of $15,000 which includes all expenses incurred from design, fabrication, transportation, installation, and artist fees. This being a multi-work collection, artists may apply for up to four installation sites. Each site has a maximum budget of $15,000.
 

APPLICATIONS MUST INCLUDE (There is no fee to apply.)

  • Brief letter of interest (one-page)
  • An artist’s statement (optional)
  • Professional resume
  • 3-5 images of past relevant work including relevant descriptions and cost. (Name files as First Initial_Last Name_Title. ex: R_Roushan_2014 Historic Mural Vista CA). NOTE: Your MB Proposal should be uploaded as one of these files.
  • Project Proposal including: (Compile as one PDF file. Name as First Initial_Last Name_MB Proposal 2020. ex: R_Roushan_MB Proposal 2020) NOTE: This should be uploaded as one of your 3-5 images.
    • Design(s) (See Design Specifications for dimension requirements)
      • Description of materials and their estimated longevity
      • Dimensions
      • Manner by which it is kinetic, sound-making, and/or engaging

Proposals will be reviewed by a jury composed of Tualatin Valley Creates staff and affiliates, community members, business owners, and others as deemed appropriate.

 

APPLICATIONS WILL BE EVALUATED BASED ON

  1. Professional qualifications
  2. Proven artistic merit of prior relevant work
  3. Experience fabricating and installing permanent artwork suitable for the outdoor environment
  4. Project management experience
  5. Experience working with local governmental (i.e. municipal) agencies a plus

 

Selected artist(s) will work with Tualatin Valley Creates staff and its respective partners to create a more detailed timeline and refined budget for the project. 

 

DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS          

  • Outside dimensions of design should not exceed 7’ long x 2.5’ wide x 4.5’ tall.
  • Design must seat no less than three (3) adults. Rule of thumb suggests 18” length per adult.
  • Seating configuration should consider a standard depth of 15-20” and seat-bottom height of 16” for comfort.
  • The artwork should be kinetic, sound-making and/or physically engaging in some way.
  • Design must include fastening method (bolt holes) to concrete footings.
  • Design should consider equitable utility by individuals who identify as mobility-, hearing-, and/or vision-impaired.
  • The work should be pedestrian scale and must meet all public safety standards.
  • All materials used must be suitable for outdoor setting, and must be reasonably vandal-resistant.
  • All materials should be as low maintenance as possible, durable and free of materials that may be considered precious or fragile.
  • The artwork must be appropriate for an all-ages audience.
  • Audible levels should not exceed 60 decibels (normal conversation volume). No electrified amplification permited.
