Solano Transportation Authority Public Sculptures

Overview:  The new building for the Solano Transportation Authority Office Building in Suisun City desires to have public art enhancing their new building that is currently being constructed. This call is for Sculptors in the western region states.

Symbolic References and Potential Themes of Artwork: The STA Building Oversight Committee desires artwork that will become an iconic and dynamic symbol for the new building headquarters for the Solano Transportation Authority. The building will serve as the center of transportation for the seven cities and rural areas of the county. Situated in downtown Suisun, and near the harbor, there is a desire for artwork that pedestrians can interact with while visually enhancing the building and streetscape of the downtown. Possible themes or symbolic inspiration for the artwork could include transportation modes, history of transportation, or reflect the fast-changing world from where we were to where we are going through transportation. The work should not feel static but rather convey Mobility and Motion.

Materials and Practical Considerations:  Materials are to be of a permanent durable nature that can hold up in an urban environment for many decades to follow. The work should be repairable if an extreme event were to happen as well as being resistant to graffiti and vandalism. Appearance during both day and nighttime should be considered. The plan is for the building to help the downtown transform into a walkable area. The building will include customer service, visitor information, public meeting areas and other STA offices. The public sculpture should complement pedestrian access and interaction with the building.

Location: Two principal locations, as shown on the plan view drawing, have been suggested. More detailed information will be made available to the five finalists for the project.

Scope of Work: Budget includes the design, engineering, fabrication, delivery, insurance and installation of two or more sculptures along Main Street.  Final selected artist(s) proposals may be for one or for all the sculptures. The selection committee and Solano Transportation Authority reserves the right to select a single artist, or more than one, from the proposals and divide the budget between more than one artist with the selected artists consultation and aproval.

Budget:

$150,000 budget for two or more sculptures including design, engineering, fabrication, delivery, installation and insurance.

Process: A five member jury will select five finalists from this call for art. Finalists will be provided more technical information, terms and conditions before acceptance of providing design proposals.  Finalists will also be provided the opportunity to research the site, the community and the Solano Transportation Authority. Each finalist will be provided a $1,000. honorarium for completion of their proposals.
