Juror: Hannah Turpin, Curatorial Assistant for Modern and Contemporary Art and Photography at the Carnegie Museum of Art

Deadline: November 30, 2020

Exhibition Dates: March 13 – April 18, 2021

$500 Juror’s Prize, $250 Second Prize, $125 Honorable Mention

Portraiture has always been about more than just creating a record of a individual’s appearance. How do we understand what it means to represent, or re-present a person or place? Represent invites traditional and contemporary approaches to portraiture across a wide array of media – painting, photography, drawing, pastels, printmaking, mixed media, ceramics, textiles, sculpture, and new media. We invite proposals of both contemporary and traditional pieces that create a visually-compelling complement, or counterpoint, to Barrett Art Center’s 1840s Greek Revival townhouse interior.

This national juried exhibition will be held March 13 through April 18, 2021.

About the Juror:

Hannah Turpin has served as the Curatorial Assistant for Modern and Contemporary Art and Photography at Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) since 2015. As a curator, Turpin is particularly interested in 20th and 21st century art practices connected to feminist and queer ideologies and focused on issues of visibility and representation. She is currently planning a solo exhibition with artist Elle Pérez (CMOA, opening January 2021) that will feature new works exploring themes of intimacy, body modification, and relationality. Turpin recently opened Counterpressures (CMOA, 2020), a thematic group exhibition that features work of ten Pittsburgh–area artists exploring their personal encounters with the climate crisis. Recent independent curatorial projects include The Self, Realized: Queering the Art of Self-Portraiture (Brew House Association, 2019), in which fourteen LGBTQ+ identified artists who work across media embraced and reimagined the self-actualizing power of the genre. Turpin previously worked at the Leslie Lohman Museum in New York. She earned her MA in Art History at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts and her BA in East Asian Studies at Denison University.
