ABOUT THE JUROR

Christine Koppes is the Curator and Director of Public Programs at ICA San José. Koppes is dedicated to curating exhibitions that promote awareness and appreciation of contemporary art and culture with an emphasis on emerging and mid-career artists. Recent projects include Sense of Self (2019), a group exhibition of photographers who explore identity and selfhood through portraiture, as well as a collaboration with the San José LGBTQ Youth Space for programming and a supplemental exhibition. Koppes also curated Surreal Sublime (2018), which explored psychedelic landscapes, and Personal Alchemy (2020) an exhibition featuring Bay Area artists Terri Friedman, Maria Paz, and Muzae Sesay. She has organized multiple large site-specific installations with artists such as Tracey Snelling and Soo Sunny Park.

Koppes manages the public programs at the ICA, which includes a lecture series Talking Art and First Friday events and performances. In 2019 she introduced Art Hangs, a series of pop-up art events throughout downtown San José. Recently she collaborated with San José Museum of Art, Exploratorium, and Kadist to present AV: Artist Videos at the Drive-In, a way to gather and experience art on the big screen in the time of social distancing. She sees public programs as an opportunity to create more engaging art experiences and build stronger connections with the community. Koppes has lived and worked in the Bay Area since 2010. From 2013 to 2018 she was Assistant Curator of Exhibition and Programs at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, CA. She received her BA in Art History from the University of California, Berkeley.

GALLERY PRESENTATION: IN-PERSON & VIRTUAL / GALLERY HOURS & SITTING

Sanchez Art Center is currently open to visitors, by appointment, with health and safety protocols in place.  SAC Staff regularly monitors the current health situation and adjusts as needed to State and County guidelines. With positive news on vaccines and the timing of the Left Coast Annual after the winter, we anticipate being able to continue to welcome art enthusiasts to the physical galleries; final determination though will be based on the health situation at the time of the exhibition.  To be prepared, and based on positive response in 2020, SAC will also be presenting all works selected for the 2021 LCA in our online galleries (SanchezArtCenterVirtualGalleries.org).

In person hours are Fri – Sat – Sun, 1-5pm, by appointment.  Each artist is encouraged to gallery sit from 1 to 3 pm or 3 to 5 pm for one day (Friday–Sunday) during the show.

Sales

Sales are encouraged. SAC retains a 30% commission on any works sold. Artists should include the 30% commission in the sales price. Sales tax will be administered by SAC.

SHIPPING & Return of accepted artworks

Shipped work must arrive at SAC by 5 pm on Monday, March 29. Artists are responsible for all shipping costs. Shipped work must be sent with a prepaid return shipping label inside the package. We will re-use your packaging for returns, so make sure it is sturdy. We appreciate you checking that your shipping company will pick up at Sanchez Art Center, to minimize SAC Staff needing to deliver packages to shippers.

Liability

Sanchez Art Center carries $150,000 art insurance for damage or theft, subject to a deductible of $500, for which the Art Center will not be liable. The artist must agree to accept the terms and conditions of the policy and to release Sanchez Art Center, its Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and agents; the Art Guild of Pacifica; and the City of Pacifica from any further liability.

ARTIST COMMITMENT

By submitting your work for consideration, you agree that the work will be available during the exhibition dates listed in this prospectus/call for entries, and that you will deliver and pick up your work on the dates specified. Alternate work may not be substituted for work selected by the juror. You also grant Sanchez Art Center permission to use images of accepted works for public relations, marketing, and archival purposes.
