In 2020 the world experienced a global pandemic. To minimize serious illness and death we were asked to live physically smaller in the world, both individually and collectively. We remained at home to keep our communities safe-- at most venturing no more than the distance of several blocks for necessities or to take a walk outdoors.
This has also been a time of heightened racism and sexism that along with the pandemic has provoked major unrest and upheaval. Tragedy, death and violence focused the attention of the world on stereotyping, injustice towards people of color and peoples dislocated by poverty, war, disease and sexual orientation. Social isolation practices further disrupted everyday life and community.
Artists help focus our attention on matters that need to be addressed in society. Art can be a way of expanding spaces, translating the imaginary onto a blank page, seeing emergent meanings in combining material and color. If the role of an artist is to see deeply, awaken the spirits, illuminate the essential in the otherwise quotidian, what can this time of distance from one another offer in terms of exploring and developing daily practices which encourage points of access to artistic engagement? What are the deep investigations or simple activities of play we have come back to or have begun for the first time as affirmative results of our new world of isolation?
View proposes an exhibition of artworks created during and stimulated by this global crisis when artists may have had limited materials but maximum time. Time spent in isolation and quarantine may open new processes of creation coincident with processing the moment itself. We therefore welcome artists to submit to the call individual works or series in progress that would be completed by the time of the exhibition. Making meaning takes myriad forms and we welcome artworks exploring in all directions.
View’s Unprecedented: Art Responds to 2020 exhibition will bring together these works — from sketchbook collaborations to finished two-dimensional works to new constructions with unfamiliar materials in three dimensions — showcasing the ways in which expression and imagination are manifested in a novel time.
All submissions must be made through CallforEntry.org (CaFÉ). This exhibition is planned for in-person at View but will also include an online exhibition with all the exhibiting works.

Jurors
Catherine Tedford
Catherine Tedford holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Fine Arts/Printmaking and has served as Director of the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University since 1989. For the past 18 years, she has been actively building a collection of political street stickers from around the world. Her Street Art Graphics digital archive project at SLU has received funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service. In 2019, she organized an exhibition from her collection for Neurotitan Gallery in Berlin, Germany, entitled Paper Bullets: 100 Years of Political Stickers from around the World—the expanded edition. She writes about street art stickers on her research blog, Stickerkitty.
David MacDonald
Received his BS in Art Education from Hampton University; and his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 1971 he joined the faculty of the School of Art at Syracuse University, retiring in 2008. His work has been featured in several ceramic textbooks and magazines. He has also been featured in several nationally televised programs; such as, HGTV’s “Modern Masters” and PBS’s “A Craftsmen’s Legacy.” He has been given a number of awards by various national arts organizations such as, National Conference for the Education in the Ceramics Arts’ “Excellence in Teaching Award” and the National Crafts Council’s “Master Craftsman Award.” Since his retirement he has been active lecturing across the country and working in his studio creating his signature ceramic works.
Stephen Horne
Trained at Boston University's School of Fine and Applied Arts after undergraduate study at Colgate University, Horne lives and works in Paul Smiths, NY, in the northern Adirondack Mountains. After a career as an editorial cartoonist, illustrator and museum exhibit designer, Stephen Horne has returned to paints and canvas, with an eye to landscapes both here at home and far away on distant coastlines. Working in acrylic and oil, Horne explores these worlds on trails near his home in Paul Smiths, NY, or, traveling, along the roiling seascapes of Nova Scotia and beach dunes of Florida.

● Artwork previously shown at View is not eligible.
● All media besides video, film and sound may be submitted through this call. Note: Any video, audio and film that might correlate with the exhibition please contact hcaufield@viewarts.org for possible opportunities
Fees
● A non-refundable entry fee of $35/$25 for Members of View enables the artist to submit up to 2 works. Each artist may submit a total of 5 works at a cost of an additional $10 per image. Payment should be made at CallforEntry.org (CaFÉ).
● If you only wish to submit one artwork, you will want to submit the image 2 times. To do this, you will want to visit the My Portfolio section and duplicate your image. On the application form select the checkbox under both images (the original and duplicated image) so you can meet the application requirements. If you have questions about CaFÉ or how to duplicate your image, contact the support team at cafe@westaf.org.

- If selected, the coverage would be for one entry fee of $35 which includes the submission of two artworks.

● Click on “Apply to Calls,” search for Unprecedented: Art Responds to 2020.
● Follow entry instructions.
● Image size should be unframed dimensions of your work.
● Submitting a work of art to this exhibition the artist agrees to the conditions and terms set forth in this Prospectus as well as in the Acceptance Notification Letter.
● CaFÉ does not permit any image changes, replacements, or refunds after submission.
● Please check your pricing carefully, price changes are not permitted after entry in CaFÉ. If your work is not for sale, make sure to list that where required in your application. By submitting your pricing through CaFÉ, you agree to sell that work at the price submitted.
Legal
● All works must be of original design and copyright of the artist.
● View reserves the right to utilize all images submitted in promotion of the exhibition and for the general promotion of View.
● View may rescind the right of hanging any work unsuitably presented or misrepresented.
International Artists
International artists are able to submit to Unprecedented: Art Responds to 2020. This is additional Information/Requirements for International Artists.
● Shipping arrangements and costs must be handled by the artist.
● Return shipping label and any other required forms must be sent either in the package or via email.
● If the artist work sells or the artist receives an award they will receive a check in US Dollars.
Selected Works
Full instructions for shipping and delivery will be provided in the Acceptance Notification Letter.
● Selection notification will be sent by May 7, 2021.
● Selected paintings must be received at View no later than June 3, 2021.
● View will retain a 35% Commission on all works sold.
● Selected artwork must be ready for installation
● All shipping is at the expense of the artist. There will be a $10 handling fee for each package shipped to View. The handling fee covers condition reporting and photographing of the work as it arrives, and follow up conditioning and repacking at the conclusion of the exhibition. You must include a prepaid shipping label for the return of the work. Accepted artists will receive detailed information regarding shipping and handling requirements.
