Juried Artists  (Fee $45)  For artists who wish to compete for prizes in the 2021 Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival, you must be selected by a jury.  As a juried artist, you will receive a welcome bag, a map with painting sites throughout this region of the Hudson Valley, participation in the Quick Draw Workshop with Shawn Dell Joyce, entry into the Quick Draw Competition with eligibility for prizes, and entry to Juror of Awards Demonstration prior to the Exhibit Reception.  In addition, you will be able to submit up to two paintings (which are eligible for awards in the festival competition) for display at the Wallkill River School Gallery.  These and two additional paintings submitted by you will appear for sale in our online gallery until late December. Any submission to the online gallery must bear an official stamp, which certifies that the artwork was created during this event. More information about a possible Traveling Exhibit will be provided later. More detail will be provided in the Artist’s Handbook that will be provided once you are selected as a participating artist.

The Painter’s Pass (Fee $30)   For artists who do not want to be subject to the juried process, the Painter’s Pass will provide the following: a welcome bag with a map of painting sites throughout this region of the Hudson Valley, participation in the Quick Draw Workshop with Shawn Dell Joyce, entry into the Quick Draw Competition with eligibility for prizes, entry to Juror of Awards Demonstration prior to Exhibit Reception, display in Wallkill River School’s online shop of one painting completed during the festival.  Artists in this category are not eligible for prizes in the main gallery exhibit.   Any submission to the online gallery must bear an official stamp, which certifies that the artwork was created during this event.  More detail will be provided in the Painter’s Pass Handbook that will be provided in August to those who have registered under this category. 

Entry Process for Juried Artists:

  • Entry will be through www.callforentry.org

  • Applications must be submitted by August 1, 2021

  • The Jury of Selection will score submissions.  Based on these scores the Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival Committee will invite up to 50 artists to participate in the competition 

  • Artists who won an award in the 2020 Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival are automatically guaranteed a spot in this year’s festival once you apply online (this does not waive the application fee)

  • The application fee for Juried Artists is $45 which does not guarantee you will be in the festival and is non-refundable unless the festival is cancelled.  

  • Competing applicants must submit an artist biography and three digital images which must be of original “en plein air” artwork created by the applicant artist within the past two years

  • Notification of selected competing artists will be emailed to each applicant no later than August 15

  • The application fee for The Painter’s Pass is $30 and provides the applicant with the benefits of The Painter’s Pass.

 

Festival Painting Submission Requirements for Juried Artists:

  • All paintings must be done “en plein air” during the event
     
  • 18”x24” maximum canvas or paper size
  • Only artwork with an official stamp will be permitted in the exhibition and sale
     
  • All submitted artwork must be available for sale
     
  • For Juried Artists at least one painting, and no more than four paintings, will be due at the Artist Drop Off.  Two of these will be featured in the gallery exhibit and awards competition in addition to being for sale online.  The rest will be for sale online only and will not be eligible for awards.

  • All artwork must be framed appropriately with wire on the back.  No gallery wrapped canvases will be accepted

  • Artwork information, tags and an art inventory form (included in packet) must be completed for each painting

  • All unsold art must be collected by the artists at the conclusion of the online sale or other arrangements must be made with Wallkill River School to have works shipped or stored.  For paintings that need to be shipped back to the artist, a box and packing materials with a prepaid shipping label must be left with the Wallkill River School

QUICK DRAW WORKSHOP WITH SHAWN DELL JOYCE (Oct. 11, 9am-12pm):

Course Description Learn time-saving tips for painting plein air very quickly (2 hours or less) and frame on the fly!  Award-winning quick draw artist Shawn Dell Joyce shows you how to choose your subject, simplify it, and set up your gear for quick and easy painting.  Then frame it with a portable frame kit.  Get tips from a pro and be ready to participate in the Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival Quick Draw Competition on Friday, Oct. 15! (For more info including Materials List and Tips Sheet see www.hvpleinair.com).

Cost:  Included in fee for accepted Juried Artists and for Painter’s Pass Artists.  All others go to  www.hvpleinair.com to register for a fee of $25.
Instructor:  Shawn Dell Joyce (www.ShawnDellJoyce.com) is the founder and former executive director of the Wallkill River School, a nonprofit art school in NY.  She teaches workshops in pastel and plein air techniques nationwide, and is endorsed by Ampersand Pastelbords who supply materials for her demos and workshops. She has participated in prestigious events around the country, bringing home awards for her loose and colorful paintings. She placed 1st in the Quick Draw at the Light Chasers 2019 Sarasota Paint Out, 1st in the 2018 Inverness Plein Air Festival, and 3rd in the 2018 Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival. A Signature Member of New York Plein Air Painters (NYPAP), and International Plein Air Painters (IPAP), she has been featured in national newspapers and magazines like the NY Times and Plein Air Magazine. She is represented by galleries in New York and Florida.

 

 

QUICK DRAW COMPETITION (Oct. 15, 8:30am-12pm):

Ready, Set, Paint!  The Quick Draw Competition is a 2-hour painting competition with prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Places. You must check in and bring your canvas for stamping between 8:30 and 9am on Oct. 15 and paint between 9 and 11am.  Judging begins at 11:30am.  Juried Artists and Painter’s Pass Artists are both eligible for prizes in this event.  Open to all others for a fee of $15.  Kids 17 and under paint free (there will be special prizes for kids).
 

NO ARTIST HOUSING FOR 2021: 
Our top priority is the health and safety of our artists and hosts. We are once again unable to offer Artist Housing for our festival due to uncertainty regarding COVID-19.  We hope to resume offering housing at our 2022 festival.

 
JURY OF SELECTION:

Tony Conner (www.tonyconner.com): 
Tony Conner’s path as a self-taught artist has followed a serious and active course that has been dedicated to the medium of watercolor and an apprenticeship to its unique disciplines. His paintings are uniquely expressive in the use of contrasts of value and color, and built on powerful and dynamic compositions.  His representational landscape and seascape paintings have been exhibited in regional and national exhibits, receiving a number of awards. He was awarded 2nd Place in the 2020 Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival.  Most of his work is focused on the quality of light itself.
Based in Bennington, VT he is a watercolor teacher and a Signature Member of the New England Watercolor Society and Vermont Watercolor Society.

Gayle Clark Fedigan (www.gaylefedigan.com):   
Gayle Clark Fedigan has been an accomplished pastel instructor and artist for 35 years.  She taught at Mt. St. Mary College in Newburgh, NY and taught workshops in Ireland, Italy, and France.  She studied art at SUNY New Paltz, and the ateliers of John Gould, Daniel Greene, John Slocum and Lisa Specht.  Her paintings have been accepted 4 times into the Pastel Society of America Show at the National Arts Club, NYC.  Gayle was the founder and director of the Hudson Valley Pastel Society and a full member of the Woodstock Artists Assn., Kent Art Assn. in Kent, Ct., and Garrison Art Assn in Garrison, NY.  She is currently a member of the Cape Cod Artists Assn in Barnstable, MA and teaches pastel painting at the Wallkill River School in Montgomery, NY.

Jim Laurino  (www.jimlaurino.com
Jim Laurino studied design and color theory at the University of Connecticut. He developed a bold representational painting style that balances the impressionists’ influence with contemporary subject matter.  His expressive application of paint, married with a keen eye for classic New England scenes, charms the viewer and truly makes his work unique.  Jim constructs frames for all of his paintings using reclaimed wood materials.  A write-up of Jim’s approach to painting and framing was featured in Plein Air Magazine, Dec-Jan 2018 issue.  His paintings are in numerous private collections. Based in Litchfield CT,  he shows his work at galleries throughout CT and enjoys participating in competitive events across the country, receiving numerous awards.


 JUROR OF AWARDS:

Andrew Lattimore  (www.andrewlattimore.com
Artist Andrew Lattimore has been teaching fine art for over 25 years.  At the age of 17, he went to the National Academy of Fine Arts in NY, completing his studies in 3 years.  Afterwards, he went to Florence for 2 years, and then moved to UK to study landscape painting.  Upon his return to the US, he quickly attracted the attention of galleries and collectors. His paintings hang in collections in the US, Italy, France, UK and Hong Kong.  Andrew deeply observes color, value, texture, form and atmosphere within the landscape which contributes to the harmony and overall design of his paintings. He returns to Europe and the UK frequently to teach plein air workshops.
