The Marjorie Schiele Prize

CALL FOR ENTRIES

The Cincinnati Art Museum announces the Marjorie Schiele Prize, a triennial competition that honors the work and legacy of Marjorie Schiele, a Cincinnati artist whose generous bequest established it. Eligibility is restricted to living artists who present a vision or model for transforming our present reality by stretching the limitations of painting and sculpture. Applicants must hold a degree from an accredited school of art and have received prior recognition in publication or exhibition beyond a local level.

The Marjorie Schiele Prize will alternate between being an open competition, leading to an exhibition judged by art peers and critics; and a professional invitational, with a jury of peers and critics pre-selecting nominators and winners. $25,000 in prize money will be awarded at the discretion of the jury.

The jurors for the first Marjorie Schiele Prize are Claudia Gould, Director, Jewish Museum (New York), Max Hollein, Director, Städel Museums (Frankfurt, Germany), Robert Storr, Dean, Yale School of Art (New Haven), Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, Museum of Modern Art (New York), and Cincinnati Art Museum Director, Aaron Betsky.

Nominated or selected works will be exhibited at the Cincinnati Art Museum or a venue it designates for no less than two months. Winning works must be offered to the Art Museum for accessioning into its permanent collection.

Please read prospectus carefully and follow all procedures.

Selection Process:
The jury will conduct the first round of the selection process for the Prize by reviewing materials submitted online in digital format through CaFÉ (www.callforentry.org). All materials must be received by midnight Mountain Time on Friday, March 30, 2012.
All artists will be notified of the jury’s finalist selections via email by Tuesday, May 15, 2012.

Finalists will be selected by the jury and notified regarding the terms and conditions of the final jury process and subsequent exhibition of works at the Cincinnati Art Museum by Tuesday, May 15, 2012.

Their selections for winner and runners-up will be announced Monday, July 2, 2012.
$25,000 in prize money will be awarded at the discretion of the jury.

Marjorie Schiele Prize exhibition will take place in the fall of 2012.
