Public Art Project
City of Lauderhill Performing Arts Center
Budget: $100,000 USD
Eligibility: National

 Project Description

The City of Lauderhill’s Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create an original public artwork(s) for the exterior of Lauderhill Performing Arts Center. The identified exterior area for the potential art opportunity is located outside of the box office area. (Please see photos).

The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center

The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center opened its doors on January 20, 2016. The building is a LEED Silver Performing Arts structure. The mission of the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center is to provide diverse, quality performing arts programming to the City of Lauderhill and its neighboring communities; to serve as a hub for community involvement, engagement and artistic expression; and, to be an influence for positive economic growth and development for our neighbors. The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center accommodates events for music, theater, dance, cinema, visual arts, and more.

Materials & Media

The City is seeking a wall sculpture with lighting that will enhance the experience of those that visit the performing arts center. The sculpture will complement the building and the interior artwork located in the lobby of the center.  Works that are innovative, inspiring, and vibrant are desired. The footprint for the work is approximately 24 ft wide x 12 ft tall.  Artists are asked to be mindful and respectful of the Center’s programs and visitors.

Maintenance and Durability

All applicants will consider the issues of long-term conservation and maintenance of public art, along with time and budget. The public artwork should be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials.  South Florida has unique challenges for public art maintenance and conservation. The artist is expected to consider the artwork’s exposure to sub-tropical climate, humidity, intense sunlight, high winds, and heavy rains. In addition, the artwork will be required to meet Florida Building Code and Hurricane Resistant Requirements.

Who May Apply?

This project is open to national (U.S. based) artists, regardless of race, color, creed, gender, gender variance, sexual orientation, national origin, age, religion, marital status, political opinion or affiliation, or mental or physical abilities. The City is especially interested in artists who can demonstrate a deep understanding of the community, as well as the area’s history.

Application Requirements

In response to this RFQ, applicants will be asked to submit 4 digital images, a résumé and a statement of interest no longer than 3,000 characters via www.callforentry.org (CaFÉ™). From these applications, the City will choose three to five finalists who will create site-specific proposals and be interviewed in a virtual format. Artists will be paid an honorarium for this work. Based on the interview and proposal, an artist or artist team will be selected for this commission. The selected artist or artist team will work with the City staff and the City’s public art consultant when finalizing their designs for installation.

Budget

The budget for this commission is $100,000.00 USD which will be allocated to the artist/team selected.

This contract amount is inclusive of all costs associated with the project including, but not limited to: the artist’s design fee, other consultation fees such as structural engineering consultation, insurance tools, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel to and from the site, per diem expenses, project documentation, contingency to cover unexpected expenses, and any other costs.

Selection Process

Three to five artists/artist teams will be selected as finalists. Those selected will receive more specific information regarding the site and can meet with City staff and the City’s public art consultant. The finalists will receive an honorarium to prepare and present the proposal in a virtual format to a selection panel. The final recommendation of the selection panel will be presented to the Public Art Committee, the City Manager, and Broward County Cultural Affairs for final approval.
