Applications for 4-week artist-in-residence are now being accepted from visual artists working in any discipline, including interdisciplinary approaches. The committee encourages artists to create and develop artwork independently in the Ritz Gallery. Artists should be willing to discuss their project conceptualization and visual progression with School of Design students, faculty, and the community during open studio hours and public events. It is not intended that the selected artist teach or provide workshops.
Given South Dakota State University’s commitment to “extend the reach and depth of the University by developing strategic programs and collaborations”, the residency selection committee especially encourages applications from artists who are currently residing and working outside and beyond the South Dakota region.
Residency Provides: During the residency the artist will be provided 24/7 access to our Ritz Gallery, a 1,200 sq. ft. lockable studio space that normally functions as a teaching gallery. The resident studio is located on campus within an academic environment. The resident artist will also be provided a furnished and equipped apartment within walking distance from the studio. Use of university equipment and space within teaching studios is limited. Therefore, applicants should list specific studio furniture and basic equipment needs in their project intent statement.
Residency Requirements: The resident artist is expected to maintain a full-time working schedule that includes an open-door policy, based studio art course scheduling to share the development of their project with students, faculty and the regional arts community. The artist will also be required to give a public lecture of their artwork. The residency will culminate with an open studio event and/or exhibition featuring the residency project in the School of Design Ritz Gallery.
Artist Responsibilities: Transportation, shipping, materials, supplies, meals and personal expenses.
Application Process: Submit application through www.callforentry.org
Include: Residency project intent statement (one page limit), resume (not exceeding three pages), three professional references, and 10 images of completed artwork and/or images relevant to statement of project intent. Residency project intent statement should include applicant’s 4-week plan to develop/produce artwork independently. For audio and/or video, please provide web-link information within resume. Application process closes on April 11, 2021 at 11:59pm, Mountain Time Zone (Denver, CO, USA).
History of Residency: The Stuart Artist-in-Residence program is funded through a donation from Joe and Signe Stuart, who worked and taught in Brookings for several decades. Signe Stuart (b. 1937) was a professor of art at South Dakota State University from 1972–1994, and Joe Stuart (1932–2016) served as director and curator at the South Dakota Art Museum from 1971–1993. Joe Stuart appreciated art in all forms but was a champion of modern and contemporary art and worked to create opportunities for regional artists throughout his career. His work at the museum made a foundational impact on the body of the institution and his legacy lives on through his sensitive curation of acquisitions for the museum.
Signe’s approach to art making relies on experimentation with painting materials and forms, often breaking from the standard rectangle and concepts of framing. “You might say my work makes a statement about energy—physical and psychic. Paintings on canvas are generally large to encompass the viewer’s perception. Works on paper have a more intimate feeling. They become wave-constructed objects rather than spaces... I want people who look at my abstract artworks to experience resonance with Nature's relationships, fields and patterns. Sequence, structure and spin, metaphors for Nature's rhythms of creation and destruction, are my emphasis. My painting practice is about tuning the material to the idea."
Together they initiated the development of an artist-in-residence program on the South Dakota State University campus to enrich our community and create opportunities for artists. Past Stuart resident artists include: Mayumi Amada, Jessica Campbell, Lori Larusso, Paige Mostowy, Neal Rock, and Izel Vargas.
