City of Overland Park Kansas Call for Artists - Call for Artists: Chalk the Walk

Project Overview:  Project Overview:  The City of Overland Park is adding a professional art element to our Chalk the Walk program for neighborhoods.

The City will be hiring three artists to work in three city parks to create an ephemeral chalk art drawing that area residents can enjoy and answer questions from the public, especially youths. Art should reflect positive messages.

Artist Fees: $600-800 for one complete mural on site per artist. 

Number of Artists to be hired: Three to six artists will be retained for this project.

Project Dates: Tuesday, July 27, 2021, Rain Dates: July 28, 29, 30

(In case of unseasonable monsoon, arrangements will be made.)

Timeline:

Deadline for Submissions: June 7, 2021

Jury Dates: June 10 - June 17, 2021

Committee Recommendation: June 18, 2021

Artist Announcements: June 22, 2021

Contracts: Week of June 28, 2021

Project Dates: Tuesday, July 27, 2021

Rain Dates: July 28, 29, 30

Expectations and Limitations:

1. One mural encompassing a minimum of 9 square feet of sidewalk or paved space.

2. Artists are expected to be on time at the park location on the day of the event.

3. Artists are expected to produce the art in a single day (6-8 hours.)

4. All art must be appropriate for a family audience.

Response Requirements:

All submissions must be received via www.callforentry.org by June 7, 2021.

Artists seeking to present an entire portfolio must still include the appropriate links electronically via www.callforentry.org by June 7, 2021. All submission information requirements apply.

Submission information will include high resolution images in jpg or gif format and the following information:

1. Images of the previous art creations and a proposed sketch of the mural with colors and proposed dimensions noted.

2. Sizes for all dimensions in inches

3. Artist vitae including previous works, relevant experience and images.

4. Statement regarding piece of art submitted: creation of, themes, messages, inspiration, process​ particularly as it relates to the neighborhood.
    

   Terms and Conditions:

   An application for this Call for Artists constitutes acceptance of the terms and conditions outlined in this Call for Artists. The City is not responsible for loss of or damage to materials included with any application submitted. Applications submitted become public information pursuant to the provisions of the Kansas Open Records Act.

   The artist awarded a contract will be notified based on the above schedule. The City and the artist, or the artist’s designated representative, will then negotiate an agreement that includes allocation of funds, scope of work, schedule, expectations of project, if applicable. If unable to reach an agreement, the City may terminate negotiations and commence negotiations with the second-ranked artist, and so forth.

   The City does not enter into any agreements where it is required that the City indemnify the other party. As a Kansas municipal corporation, the City will not enter into any agreements where it is subject to the laws of any other state other than the state of Kansas.

   This Call for Artists does not obligate the City to enter into an agreement, to pay any costs incurred in the preparation of the proposal to this Call for Artists or in subsequent negotiations, or to produce an agreement for the project. The City reserves the right to reject any or all applications, re-issue the Call for Artists or procure service by other means.

   No artists’ images will be used by the City for marketing or other purpose unless written permission is obtained from the artist(s).

   Sumission will only be accepted though www.callforentry.org. Do not mail information or artwork.
