EXHIBITION DATES: March 1- April 15, 2022

The 2022 NCECA Juried Student Exhibition will run concurrently with Fertile Ground, the 56th annual conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, Sacramento, California, March 16-19, 2022. Ceramic artists Patsy Cox and Andres Payan Estrada will select works for the exhibition.

ABOUT THE 2022 EXHIBITION JURORS

Patsy Cox is Professor of Visual Art and Chair of Ceramics at California State University Northridge. She is an artist, educator and arts advocate. She is a former president of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and a Fellow of the Council. She is currently serving on the board of the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, California. She has participated in the Annenberg Alchemy and Alchemy+ programs for nonprofit excellence, was a Getty Scholar for the Linking Service Learning and the Visual Arts Program and has coordinated courses for the CSU Summer Arts Program. She was the curator for the 74th Scripps Annual, Stories Without Borders: Personal Narratives in Clay and served on the juror panel for South Arts 2021 State Fellowships. Cox is an installation-based artist who has exhibited and lectured nationally and internationally, most recently as a resident artist with Dunhuang Creative Center in Lanzhou, China culminating with the permanent collection installation piece, Huang He. She holds a MFA from the University of Delaware and BFA from Missouri University. She lives and maintains a productive studio near downtown Los Angeles.

Andres Payan Estrada, born in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, currently lives and works in Los Angeles. An artist and curator whose practice focuses on issues revolving around contemporary craft along with material and object practices with a focus on ceramics and queer theory. He is currently the curator of public engagement at Craft Contemporary and recently served as special visiting art faculty at the California Institute of the Arts and mentor at Warren Wilson College's Master of Arts in Critical Craft Studies. Payan Estrada is also the co-curator and founder of Craft Contemporary's National Clay Biennial, has created and lead the annual fundraiser and sale CLAY LA, and recently curated the exhibition Total Collapse, Clay in the Contemporary Past for the Arizona State University Museum, along with establishing POTLUCK, a large-scale biennial clay and ceramics fundraiser, auction, and free public program series. 

ABOUT THE VENUE – The Library Gallery at Sacramento State

Founded in 2001, the University Library Gallery is part of the University Galleries in the College of Arts & Letters at Sacramento State. The Library Gallery is dedicated to the open exploration of contemporary art and visual culture, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally through collaborations with artists, producing exhibitions, public programs and publications. The Library Gallery presents 6-8 exhibitions each academic year.

ELIGIBILITY
The 2022 NCECA Juried Student Exhibition, NCECA has extended the call to include students enrolled in the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico; undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate students may apply. Works submitted for the exhibition must have been completed within 12 months of the submission deadline. Students enrolled at institutions on which the jurors currently serve as faculty are not eligible to apply.

MEDIA & EXCLUSIONS
All works must be primarily ceramic. Mixed media works will be accepted only when clay is the dominant material. Works submitted must have been completed within 12 months of the exhibition entry deadline.

⮚      All work samples and attachments (other than resume) submitted must not include visual representation of the applicant’s name. This is to enable the adjudication process to be accomplished without bias of knowing artists’ identities. Any reference to an applicant’s name or school will disqualify the participant from jurying.
⮚      Works involving video that references ceramic materials, process, history and/or extend expressive capacities of work in clay will be considered at the discretion of the jurors. Video work samples should be submitted as links to accessible files uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, or a similar platform. Up to two video samples may be submitted; however, one must be no longer than two minutes in duration. Another link may be provided to a full-length video. Videos requiring private login information to be entered for review will not be considered.
⮚      Works involving photography, whether digitally, or chemically produced, that reference ceramic materials, process, history and/or extend expressive capacities of work in clay will be considered at the discretion of the jurors.
⮚      The jurors will make final determinations, following venue confirmation of ability to install all works in a safe and professional manner.
⮚      Floor and pedestal works must be self-supporting.
⮚      Wall hanging works must be provided with hanging systems that are suitably fashioned to securely install.
⮚      Individual objects should weigh less than 100 lbs. and be of dimensions that can pass through a 36” x 80” entrance door. Larger works that are designed to be assembled from multiple parts in a modular fashion may be accommodated.
⮚      NCECA and exhibition venue staff reserve the right to exclude from exhibition works that arrive at the venue in unstable condition.

EXCLUSIONS:
NCECA reserves the right to exclude from adjudication any submissions that include more than two works or more than two (2) media files per work. Please do not submit the same pieces to multiple NCECA calls in the same year.

Additionally, NCECA reserves the right to exclude from adjudication any submissions made with incorrect fees. It is the artist's responsibility to verify and update member status before submitting his/her work and paying the entry fee. NCECA will not process refunds to those who submit incorrect fees.

ENTRY PROCEDURES and APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications will be accepted online only using the CaFÉ™ entry process.

NUMBER OF WORKS:
No more than TWO works of art may be submitted.
For each artwork, you may submit only two (2) media files. (i.e. Full view and detail view)
Jurors will only consider up to two (2) works and review up to four (4) TOTAL media files (See media files details below) by each entrant.

Jurying will be conducted from images of actual works available for the exhibition.

All submissions must include declaration of a monetary value for insurance purposes. This value may not be altered at a later date.

(Please read all technical information regarding file types, size limitations, and duration requirements detailed below carefully.)

BEFORE beginning submission, applicants must be prepared to provide the following as well as images and image details. It is recommended to save all text to your local computer for future reference. Please proof carefully and submit as print ready.

⮚      Artist statement: (up to 1000 characters with spaces) To be presented to the Jurors. Do not include the artist name in the statement.

The following will not be presented to the Jurors but are REQUIRED. This is to enable the adjudication process to be accomplished without bias of knowing artists’ identities.  If selected the information may be used for promotional purposes, in a catalogue, and internal statistics.

⮚      Short bio: (limit 1000 characters with spaces). Providing biographical text written in third person will help to restrain editing that might be necessary to support the creation of publishable content.
⮚      Level of Study: Undergraduate, Graduate, or Post-baccalaureate

⮚      Headshot: jpg format only. Will not be presented to Jurors. If selected may be used for a catalogue.

Upload Media Files – Artists’ names may not appear in any of the images or file names.

IMAGE: JPG only. 1200 pixels or greater on the longest side. No smaller than 1920 pixels on the longest side. Landscape or portrait formats are acceptable. The file size may not exceed 5MB.
AUDIO: Only AIFF, WAV, XMF, MP3 up to 10MB with a minimum bit rate of 96.
VIDEO: Only 3GP, WMV, AVI, MOV, ASF, MPG, MP4, M2T, MKV, M2TS up to 100MB with a minimum resolution of 640 x 480 maximum 1920 x 1080; minimum 12 fps recommended 30 fps.

NO CHANGES will be allowed once an entry has been submitted. Once data is entered in the system, it cannot be altered. Please, PROOFREAD your data carefully as this information may be used to generate the catalogue, insurance, and publicity information.

Each work submitted must include the following details:

●        Title
●        Medium (60-character limit – i.e. Stoneware, celadon glaze, wood base)
●        Height/Width/Depth (in inches)
●        Retail value
(Retail value must be reported even for works included in the exhibition that are not available for purchase) Insurance value will be calculated as 50% of the retail value.
●        Year completed - Works submitted must have been completed within 12 months of the exhibition entry deadline.
●        Primary Discipline (ceramics)
●        Description (300 character limit – any additional information you would like the jurors to know about this work. (i.e. “This work explores the nature of communication in interpersonal relationships. It seems that we communicate with each other so poorly that it is hopeless we can improve and unite again.”)

ADJUDICATION
Jurors Patsy Cox and Andres Payan Estrada will make selections for the exhibition from digital images and work statements to develop the exhibition. The jurors will ONLY select actual artworks available for the exhibition.

Artists’ names must not appear in any of the images or file names submitted for consideration. This is to enable the adjudication process to be accomplished without bias of knowing artists’ identities.

CATEGORIES AND AWARDS
Merit awards will be determined by the jurors from the actual works and will be announced during the exhibition reception and at the Second Members' Business Meeting. Recent NJSE Exhibition Awards have included NCECA, company and organizationally sponsored cash prizes, and purchase awards. The final award list will be published at the time of the exhibition.

SHIPPING:
The size of your work will impact your shipping decisions so you might consider smaller work for entry. For work being shipped from Canada and Mexico, please be aware of required documents, customs, and brokerage needs. It is the responsibility of the student to securely pack their works for the exhibition, arrange and pay for shipping TO and FROM Sacramento, insure their artworks while in transit, and have all international documents in order. PLEASE RETAIN ALL HARD COPY AND/OR ELECTRONIC RECEIPTS TO BE SUBMITTED FOR REIMBURSEMENT, after the exhibition has closed.

PRE-DELIVERY COMMUNICATION with venue and artists’ involvement with installation works must be confirmed in advance.

NCECA recommends that all artists document their packaging process using digital images and text description prior to closing all crates and / or boxes for shipment. This documentation may provide critical information to support claims against carriers for damage in transit.

Please note: In previous NJSEs a significant percentage of work has arrived broken so be sure your work is packed properly.

Key to any good packaging and shipping of ceramic art is using quality materials in adequate supply. Do not reuse boxes and make sure that works are stabilized to mitigate any possibility of movement within containers. Shock absorbing material such as bubble wrap and or foam should cover at least two inches around all surfaces of objects. Wherever possible do not place more than one ceramic object within a single box or compartment. Double boxing is highly recommended with a minimum of 2” of shock absorbing packing material between inner and outer boxes. Crates, rather than boxes should be used for heavier objects. Additional tutorials on packing artwork for shipping can be found on YouTube. If you are still in doubt, work with a professional packager/shipper.

When paying to ship your work TO the venue, be sure to also purchase RETURN-SHIPPING. The pre-paid return shipping label is to be included in your box. A copy of the return label is to be emailed to kate@nceca.net PLEASE RETAIN ALL HARD COPY AND/OR ELECTRONIC RECEIPTS TO BE SUBMITTED FOR REIMBURSEMENT, after the exhibition has closed.

RETURN OF WORK:
The exhibition will be taken down beginning April 18 and works will be packed for return shipping on or about April 25. All return shipping of unsold works must be paid in advance by participating artists who must be the shipper of record. NCECA will reimburse up to $200.00 per artist for ROUND-TRIP shipping/transportation after the close of the exhibition.

ORIGINAL hard copy receipt/s, electronic receipt/s or mileage verification for shipping/transport along with the 2022 NJSE Reimbursement form (to be sent with agreement and again post conference) must be submitted to NCECA by June 1, 2022 to be eligible for reimbursement. NCECA will not reimburse shipping for work that is sold; the purchaser is responsible for pickup or shipping charges.

INSURANCE AND SALES
INSURANCE:
The Library Gallery at the California State University, Sacramento will provide insurance coverage of work while on their premises for market value as confirmed by the venue or for the amount available. Artists will be responsible for insurance of work in transit. The gallery insurance will provide coverage for reported value. Retail value must be reported even for works included in the exhibition that are not available for purchase. In the event that damages occur to works in the exhibition, artists may be required to demonstrate that the value(s) declared are established fair market values.
SALES:
Artists will receive 50% commission on work sold. NCECA will not reimburse return shipping/transport for work that is sold; the purchaser is responsible for pickup or shipping charges. 

PHOTOGRAPHY
Participating artists must agree to allow NCECA, the Library Gallery at the California State University, Sacramento, and visitors to photograph work while on display for educational and publicity purposes. Images of accepted works will be retained by NCECA for promotional purposes, posting on the NCECA website and sharing with media related publications. NCECA may create a digital catalog and/or an online version of the exhibition using images of accepted work.

CATALOGUE
NCECA may produce a color catalogue documenting the exhibition experience through color images of artwork. Each artist in the exhibition will receive one (1) complimentary copy of the catalogue. Additional copies of the catalogue will be available for purchase-on-demand online.

Shipped and hand delivered works: January 15 - February 1, 2022. Artists wishing to hand deliver works must contact the gallery director in advance. Final details to be provided in the accepted artist’s agreement.

Artists needing to travel to install will be responsible to finance that travel and their housing and board themselves.)
