The application deadline is Tuesday, September 15, 2021.

There are three residency periods in 2022. Each residency is a maximum of eight weeks and a minimum of six weeks. Residencies begin in February, May, and September. The base stipend is $2,000 for six weeks, with a stipend of $250 for each additional week up to eight total. Residents will have an apartment at historic Verkamp's Visitor Center. For lodging details, please visit grandcanyon.org/artist.

This program is designed to host professional artists working at a high level in their field. We will follow an artist-focused and open-ended model that prioritizes on-site research and exploration in the interest of informing public interactions and understanding. While some visitor contact and outreach will be required, the majority of the artists’ time while on-site will be spent as they best see fit. We hope that the work that comes from this freedom will—through future on- and off-site exhibits, publications, and presentations—advance our fundamental connection with Grand Canyon. It is in this capacity that artists are invited to come and to work.

While no specific requirements will be placed on the content or direction of the artists' proposals, applicants must have an idea of direction, topic, and the project they will work on while during their residency when they apply. Projects may evolve and change during their residency as long as the new direction also has relevance to the canyon or its communities and meets all other program requirements and NPS guidelines. While some art forms are intuitively adaptable to this type of residency program, others will have to interpret their vision to adapt to the program and site constraints.

Selections will be made without regard to race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, age, or national origin. Every reasonable effort within the capacity of GCC will be made to accommodate artists with disabilities or accessibility needs.

Each artist is required to provide publication-quality, digital representation of the work done during the residency, as well as later work created as a direct result of the residency. While there is no exhibition, donation, or artwork requirement, each artist is asked to contribute a one-page two-dimensional expression of their on-site experience.

We welcome applicants from a wide variety of artistic disciplines, including:

  • Visual Art (two and three-dimensional, photography, sculpture, painting, textiles, drawing, or collage)
  • Installation or Land-based Art
  • Printmaking
  • Audio (performance or composition)
  • Film (documentary, fictional, or art)
  • Writing (poetry, fiction, essays, storytelling, or playwriting)
  • Indigenous arts, ethnographic fine art
  • New media
  • Performance art, choreography, dance, or theater
  • Arts Professionals (curatorial arts, or arts writing)
  • Social Practice
  • Interdisciplinary arts

Artists will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Artistic merit, track record of past accomplishments, and the quality and nature of the work samples provided
  • How the work plan is inspired by and will contribute to broadening our understanding of Grand Canyon and/or its surrounding communities
  • How the work plan and public programs foster innovation, diversity, and relevance to National Park visitors

Partners, spouses, and guests for the duration of the residency will generally not be permitted. Exceptions to this policy will be evaluated on an individual and based on the person’s critical role to the resident and their work.

If the application fee presents an economic hardship, please contact us at residency@grandcanyon.org prior to applying to discuss an economic hardship waiver.
