The Downeast National Juried Sculpture Exhibition is located in Pitt County, North Carolina. The exhibition has two components: a month long indoor exhibition and a year long outdoor exhibition.

The DownEast outdoor sculpture exhibition is a joint exhibition among Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge, ECU Student Center Art Galleries, City of Greenville, Town of Winterville, Town of Farmville, Wahl-Coates Elementary School for the Arts, and the Greenville Museum of Art.

This year long outdoor sculpture exhibition is open to all artists ages 18 and up. All entries must be submitted digitally via Café and received by Saturday, November 20, 2021. Work should be large scale to fit one of the 18 sculpture pads in various locations throughout Pitt County, NC. Sculpture pads range from 4’x5’ to 10’ round in diameter. Artists must be available to install and remove their own work. They may have some help from the entity where the sculpture is placed, but this is not guaranteed.

All work must remain on exhibit from the end of February 2022 through the end of February 2023. The opening of the exhibition will be Friday, March 4, 2022. Work must be able to be exhibited outdoors and utilize materials that are exterior grade.

Each artist may submit up to 3 entries for a total of $20. Additional entries cost $5 per entry with a limit of 6 total. If less than 3 artworks are available for the exhibition, please submit the artwork file in duplication to reach the minimum. All entries must be submitted digitally via Café and received by Saturday, November 20, 2021. Images of work must be submitted as jpgs. Videos are accepted but count as an entry. Emerge Gallery will retain a 40% commission (30% for East Carolina University students). If work is not for sale, an insurance value must be given and NFS stated or work will not be insured.

Installation and removal of accepted work will be coordinated by the exhibiting entities. Aid with installation may be offered by the exhibiting entity, but not guaranteed. Contracts for a one-year term will be conducted with each entity and the chosen artists for one year from the last week in February 2022 until the last week in February 2023.

Each sculpture placement will be awarded $1,200. Additional award prizes include:
1st Place: $1,500
2nd Place: $750
3rd Place: $500

James Matson is a sculptor and set designer living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He started off as a potter but kept sticking chunks of steel and wood into chunks of clay until it wouldn’t fit in the kiln anymore. His work centers around personal narratives seeking to find those universal moments that we share as individuals. His focus on the relationship between space and form is central to all his sculptural work.

He recently retired from teaching after thirty-five years of Sculpture, Ceramics, and Three-Dimensional Design. His work has been seen both here and abroad and is part of several collections.

Work will be insured by the presenting entities. There are 18 sculpture pads total within Pitt County. Work will be insured only for 60 percent of the sales price and only for the exhibition dates (does not include installation and removal). Insurance value must be a realistic value and may be questioned. Proof of similar sales will be asked for if necessary. Consent to reproduce for publicity, catalog, or educational purposes is assumed unless specifically reserved in writing. Submission of entry constitutes agreement to all conditions.
