The 2023 NCECA Juried Student Exhibition will run concurrently with Currents the 57th annual conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, Cincinnati, Ohio, March 15-18, 2023. Ceramic artists Wesley Brown and Natalia Arbelaez will select works for the exhibition.

2023 JURIED STUDENT EXHIBITION JURORS:

Natalia Arbelaez
Natalia Arbelaez is a Colombian American artist, born and raised in Miami, Florida to immigrant parents. She received her B.F.A. from Florida International University and her M.F.A. from The Ohio State University, with an Enrichment Fellowship. In 2016-2017 she was a Rittenberg Fellow at Clay Art Center; Port Chester, New York and was awarded the Inaugural Artaxis Fellowship that funded a residency to Watershed in Newcastle, ME. Her work has been exhibited internationally, in museums, galleries, and
included in various collections, such as the Everson Museum, MAD Museum, and The ICA Miami. She has been recognized by NCECA as a 2018 Emerging Artist and was a 2018-19 resident artist at the Ceramics Program at, Harvard University where she researched pre-Columbian art and histories. Natalia was an artist in residence at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City where she researched the work of historical and influential women ceramicists of color and continued this research as a 2021
Visiting Artist at AMOCA in Pomona, CA.

Wesley Brown
I create work to capture both physicality and dynamism. 
I act upon the clay with passion to create works that memorialize struggle, trial, and triumph. Using the malleability and immediacy inherent to clay I build my work in an uninhibited practice. I want my work to capture an ethos familiar with hardship possessing a dignity and reverence found through a resoluteness to continue.
I have a schooling in the making of functional wares and sculpture and have worked and studied as an artist in such places as Indiana, North Carolina, and Jingdezhen, China. I hold an Associates of Art from Sinclair Community College, a Bachelors of Fine Art from Bowling Green State University, and a Masters of Fine Arts from Indiana University.

ABOUT THE VENUE: 
The DAAP Galleries are intended to serve a broad and diverse audience of students, faculty, and staff of the University, as well as from the wider Cincinnati community.

Dorothy W. and C. Lawson Reed, Jr. Gallery hosts exhibitions that focus on the fields of study associated with the College of DAAP, with emphasis on current work in those disciplines brought in from outside the college to enrich the exposure of students to work produced elsewhere.

The Philip M. Meyers, Jr. Memorial Gallery is a venue for presenting the work of DAAP faculty and students to the university community, and hosts other exhibitions broadly reflecting the varied disciplines associated with the larger university community.

ELIGIBILITY:.

• The 2023 NCECA Juried Student Exhibition, is open to students enrolled at the time the work was created, in the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico; undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate students may apply.
• Works submitted for the exhibition must have been completed within 12 months of the submission deadline.
• Applicants must have been working toward a degree or be a post-baccalaureate in art at the time the work was created.
• Students enrolled at institutions on which the jurors currently serve as faculty are not eligible to apply.
   

NCECA membership is not a requirement of eligibility, however, NCECA members receive complimentary entry to NCECA exhibitions.

Membership in NCECA is paid on an annual basis and is not included in conference registration. NCECA membership runs 12 months from the date of joining or renewal.  

MEDIA & LIMITATIONS:
All works must be primarily ceramic. Mixed media works will be accepted only when clay is the dominant material. 

• All work samples and attachments (other than resume) submitted must not include visual representation of the applicant’s name. This is to enable the adjudication process to be accomplished without bias of knowing artists’ identities. Any reference to an applicant’s name or school will disqualify participant from jurying.
• Works involving video that references ceramic materials, process, history and/or extend expressive capacities of work in clay will be considered at the discretion of the jurors. Video work samples should be submitted as links to accessible files uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, or similar platform. Up to two video samples may be submitted; however, one must be no longer than two minutes in duration. Another link may be provided to a full-length video. Videos requiring private login information to be entered for review will not be considered.
• Works involving photography, whether digitally, or chemically produced, that reference ceramic materials, process, history and/or extend expressive capacities of work in clay will be considered at the discretion of the jurors.
• The jurors will make final determinations selections, following venue confirmation ability to install all works in a safe and professional manner.
• Floor and pedestal works must be self-supporting.
• Wall hanging works, must be provided with hanging systems that are suitably fashioned to securely install.
• Individual objects should weigh less than 100 lbs. and be of dimensions that can pass through a 36” x 80” entrance door. Larger works that are designed to be assembled from multiple parts in a modular fashion may be accommodated. 
  
  EXCLUSIONS:
  NCECA reserves the right to exclude from the review/selection process any submissions that include more than two (2) works or more than two (2) media files per work. Please do not submit the same pieces to multiple NCECA calls in the same year.

Additionally, NCECA reserves the right to exclude from review/selection process any submissions made with incorrect fees. It is the artist’s responsibility to verify and update member status before submitting his/her work and paying the entry fee. NCECA will not process refunds to those who submit incorrect fees. 

NCECA and exhibition venue staff reserve the right to exclude from exhibition works that arrive at the venue in unstable condition.

ENTRY PREPARATION & APPLICATION PROCESS:

Interested artists may submit up to two (2) distinct works with no more than two (2) media files; images, video, or audio, per work  (i.e. Full view and detail view)

Upload Media Files – Artists’ names may not appear in any of the images or file names.

Uploaded media files will be stored in your CaFE Portfolio as a repository of images to be accessed while completing the submission. Media file submissions must comply with specifications found at CaFÉ https://www.callforentry.org/artist-help-cafe/uploading-media/

Artworks must be available for the exhibition.
All submissions must include declaration of a monetary value for insurance purposes. 
This value may not be altered at a later date.

BEFORE beginning submission, applicants must be prepared to provide the following as well as images and image details. It is recommended to save all text to your local computer for future reference. Please proof carefully and submit as print ready.

Artists’ names must not appear in any of the images or file names submitted for consideration. This is to enable the adjudication process to be accomplished without bias of knowing artists’ identities.

• Artist statement: (up to 1000 characters with spaces)
       Do not include the artist name in the statement.
• Short bio: Will not be presented to Jurors. If selected may be used for a catalogue. (limit 1000 characters with spaces).  Providing biographical text written in third person will help to restrain editing that might be necessary to support the creation of publishable content.
• Level of Study: Undergraduate, Graduate, or Post-baccalaureate
• School Name, Professor Name, Professor Phone, Professor E-mail
• Pronouns (optional)
• Headshot: jpg format only. Will not be presented to Jurors. If selected may be used for a catalogue.

Each work image uploaded to your Portfolio in CaFE and submitted with your entry must include the following details:

• Title
• Medium (60 character limit with spaces)
• Height/Width/Depth (in inches)
• Artwork for Sale? (Yes/No)
• Retail Value (Insurance value and commission will be calculated as 50% of the retail value.) All submissions must include declaration of a monetary value for insurance purposes. Retail value must be reported even for works included in the exhibition that are not available for purchase. This value may not be altered at a later date.
• Year completed - Works must have been completed within 12 months of the entry deadline.
• Primary Discipline (ceramics)
• Description - any additional information you would like the jurors to know about this work. (i.e. “This work explores the nature of communication in interpersonal relationships. It seems that we communicate with each other so poorly that it is hopeless we can improve and unite again.”)

NO CHANGES will be allowed once an entry has been submitted. Once data is entered in the CaFE system, it cannot be altered. Please PROOFREAD your data carefully as this information may be used to generate the catalogue, insurance, and publicity information.

REVIEW and SELECTION PROCESS: 
Jurors Wes Brown and Natalia Arbelaez will make selections for the exhibition from digital images and work statements to develop the exhibition. The jurors will ONLY select actual artworks available for the exhibition. Selected artists will be notified in early November 2022 and may be asked to provide high-resolution images.

CATEGORIES AND AWARDS:
Merit awards will be determined by the jurors from the actual works and will be announced during the exhibition reception. Recent NJSE Exhibition Awards have included NCECA, company and organizationally sponsored cash prizes, and purchase awards. The final award list will be published at the time of the exhibition.

It is the responsibility of artists to securely pack their works for the exhibition, arrange and pay for shipping and insurance TO the exhibition venue. NCECA recommends that all artists document their packaging process using digital images and text description prior to closing all crates and /or boxes for shipment. This documentation may provide critical information to support claims against carriers for damage in transit. 

Work must arrive at the gallery January 9-11, 2023.

Please note: In previous exhibitions a significant percentage of work has arrived broken so be sure your work is packed properly. Key to any good packaging and shipping of ceramic art is using quality materials in adequate supply. Do not re-use boxes and make sure that works are stabilized to mitigate any possibility of movement within containers. Shock absorbing material such as bubble wrap and or foam should cover at least two inches around all surfaces of objects. Wherever possible do not place more than one ceramic object within a single box or compartment. Double boxing is highly recommended with a minimum of 2” of shock absorbing packing material between inner and outer boxes. Crates, rather than boxes should be used for heavier objects. Additional tutorials on packing artwork for shipping can be found on YouTube. If you are still in doubt, work with a professional packager/ shipper.

RETURN OF UNSOLD WORK:
Immediately after the close of the exhibition, the DAAP Galleries will pack the work for return shipping. NCECA will make the arrangements and pay to insure and return ship the work via FedEx or FedEx Freight. The works will be re-packed in the crating/boxing the works were shipped to Cincinnati in. If appropriate reusable crating/boxing is not supplied, the artist will be responsible for re-crating costs.

INSURANCE:
DAAP Galleries shall maintain insurance coverage for all works included in the exhibition only while they are on its premises. Artists will be responsible for insurance of work in transit to Cincinnati. The gallery insurance will provide coverage for up to 50% of the works reported retail value. Retail value must be reported even for works included in the exhibition that are not available for purchase. In the event that damages occur to works in the exhibition, artists may be required to demonstrate that the value(s) declared are established fair market values.

SALES:
Works to be offered for purchase at the discretion of artists included in the exhibition. Artists will receive 50% of the purchase value on works sold and 50% will be retained as commission by NCECA and the exhibition venue. Shipping of purchased works will be the responsibility of collectors.

PHOTOGRAPHY:
Participating artists must agree to allow NCECA, DAAP Galleries, and visitors to photograph work while on display for educational and publicity purposes. Images of accepted works will be retained by NCECA for promotional purposes, posting on the NCECA website and sharing with media related publications. NCECA may create a digital catalog and/or an online version of the exhibition using images of accepted work.

CATALOGUE:
NCECA may produce a color catalogue documenting the exhibition experience through color images of artwork. Each artist in the exhibition will receive one (1) complimentary copy of the catalogue. Additional copies of the catalogue will be available for purchase on online.

Ship to arrive or hand delivery: January 9-11, 2023  
Artists needing to travel to install will be responsible to finance that travel and their housing and board themselves.
