Budget
The budget for this project is $50,000. The selected artist will be responsible for shipment/delivery to site and installation. The available budget must cover all artists’ expenses including price of artwork, artist fees, materials, tools, travel, installation, and other associated costs. The pad for the artwork as well as any necessary lighting or integrated landscaping will be provided by the City.

Project Description
The City’s existing roundabout at S Ridgeview Rd and E Sheridan St is in a high traffic location with good sightlines from a distance that lends itself well to a public art piece that will enhance the experience of driving through the community. Ridgeview Road is a critical link in the City’s network of arterial streets, bicycle lanes and sidewalks. Ridgeview Road provides access to Garmin’s campus, Olathe South High School, Indian Trail Middle School, several churches, businesses, and residential subdivisions, and links southern neighborhoods to Olathe’s emerging downtown.

The Olathe Public Art Committee is accepting proposals for either an existing sculpture that will fit the site, or ideas for original work to be commissioned for the site that can meet the deadline of a March 2022 installation.

The submitted artwork should reflect one or more of the following goals:

  • Create a strong and visually interesting public sculpture for Olathe.
  • Communicates the value Olathe places on art and culture in the community.
  • Be visible from a moving vehicle both day and night.
  • Feature an aspect of Olathe's vibrant community- the future, landscape, history and/or culture.

The Public Art Committee reserves the right to make no selection in this process if the appropriate piece is not presented.

Artwork Design/Safety Guidelines

·  The artwork should be visually interesting from all roundabout entry points. Please note the roundabout may also be visible from the highway above to the West of the roundabout.

·  The artwork should be appreciated from a distance, not requiring up-close or extended inspection.

·  Interactive artwork is discouraged, so as not to encourage pedestrian activity in the roundabout.

·  The artwork must be fabricated in durable, permanent, outdoor media that is safe, easily maintained, and proven its viability in public installations.

·  The artwork should not create a distracting situation for drivers using the roundabout.

·  It is not necessary for drivers to be able to see through the roundabout.

·  Highly reflective materials or finishes that may create a glare, or significant amount of color associated with traffic warnings (particularly red and yellow) should be avoided.

·  The existing landscape in the roundabout will be altered or removed to accommodate the artwork. The selected artist may be asked to meet with the landscape architect to site and place the artwork.

·  The diameter of the roundabout (inside the bricks) is approx. 97'. The design of everything inside the stamped brick apron is up for redesign.

Submission Requirements
Interested artists should submit an application through Cafe which will be comprised of the following:

1. A professional resume/CV.

3. Please submit up to 6 clearly labeled images, drawings, or videos or combination of still images and a video of your proposed or existing artwork to be considered.

Selection Process
Submissions will be reviewed by the Olathe Public Art Committee with the intent of identifying 2-3 proposals most favored by the committee. The committee may engage the public/neighborhood in the final selection by collecting votes for the preferred artwork. The City of Olathe grants final approval for the artwork selected by the committee.
